      Software Engineer (Band 6) Interview

      Feb 27, 2016
      Anonymous employee
      Raleigh, NC
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at IBM (Raleigh, NC) in Oct 2012

      Interview

Between first contact from the Hiring manager, to my offer, it was 8 days (very fast). I was contacted by email. A technical phone screen was scheduled for the following day (30 min and 30 min). One was more technical, the other we just went over my resume. The day after, the on-site interview was scheduled for 5 days later. They flew me in for it, and it lasted like 6 hours. I spoke with 5 different team members. Most were pretty straight-forward questions about Java, things on my resume. The tougher one was with a Senior engineer who was a phD. He asked about Data Structures and Algorithms, Big-O algorithm efficiency, but even this wasn't so hard. No one asked me to code anything on a whiteboard, which was awesome because I was nervous. But if asked to, I would've solved perpetual motion to get that job. Additionally, I brought a folder of some of my best work from college, to showcase it when applicable. By the last interview, they patched me in with the hiring manager (who was located at another city), and he basically said "what can we do to make you come work for us?" or something to that effect. I said "make me an offer". The next day after I got home, I got an email with an official offer. I was ecstatic. The offer was for an entry-level position. Since I had interned at the company previously, I think that helped me get hired too. I was basically converted to a full-time employee from an intern.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

One the phone, they asked how to define a destructor in Java (like in C++, which would deallocate the object from memory).

      Question 2

On-site, they asked what is the algorithmic efficiency (Big-O) of a linked list, binary tree, hash table, etc.
