      Developer's dream job

      May 12, 2021 - Fullstack Software Developer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

As a developer, I believe Thinkific has the best product culture out of all the tech companies in Vancouver. - Overtime is not required nor recommended, and management actively recommends maintaining healthy separation of work from the rest of life to prevent burnout - But if you're a late owl, or have erratic work patterns, management is amenable to alternative schedules as long as you're able to meet minimal expectations of communication - Healthy code review patterns are actively practised (no passive aggressive remarks, no blaming/shaming, no repetitive comments for repeated code styling issues) - Culture encourages actively asking questions and engaging in discussions (done mostly via Slack) - Plenty of room for career development, like a monthly stipend for personal growth, ability to change teams/focus (ie. app logic => infra management)

      Cons

      - You may not enjoy it here if you heavily enjoy/depend on traditional structures of corporate software development, or if you are a specialist in one area who doesn't enjoy blurring the lines of your area of focus - Product management does listen to individual contributors, but not consistently. Developer's painpoints can be gatekept if not passed up through the right channels

Ya, it's as good as the reviews say

      Pros

      • Inspiring group of team members who inspire you to be the best version of yourself • Incredible management with actionable coaching, autonomy, and genuinely cares about your career growth, success, and happiness • A product that's world-changing. I've never felt this fulfilled in a sales role offering a product that will literally impact hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, based on the recommendations and best practices I suggest • Competitive compensation and incredible career growth on a rapidly scaling team

      Cons

      • To be successful you'll need to be a self-starter, especially in a work-from-home environment. You're given a great amount of autonomy to build processes, increase your pipeline, and grow your skill sets in areas that you value the most. It's like a sports team where each person brings a unique talent. If you're not prepared to put your best foot forward, take action, or "give a sh*t", it isn't a role to drag your heels.

The best people, the best mission.

      Pros

Been here for a while now and company has never lost sight of who we’re working for: our creators and their students. Customer focused in everything we do. Every team member is passionate about crafting great experiences for the customer and our peers at the company. Love it here.

      Cons

Scaling has been difficult. Siloing has led to overlapping work between departments.

      New and exciting challenges daily!

      Pros

There's never a dull day on the job, with new opportunities and problems to tackle regularly. There is a lot of freedom and flexibility to do what you think is best and will drive forward the vision of the company. Team members are honest and willing to give feedback to help you grow and develop professionally. With the pandemic this past year, Thinkific tackled transitioning to a remote-first culture amazingly with lots of support for people who were/are struggling with feeling quarantine life. On the Product side, things are moving quickly but in a really great way. Leadership is coming together to drive forward a strong product roadmap with lots of goals that will definitely stretch the team, but totally attainable if we keep at it.

      Cons

We are growing SO fast and this environment is NOT for everyone. If change and uncertainty scares you, Thinkific will probably be too stressful for you. If you're likely to get caught in the present / can't look at the big picture - it can feel like certain things aren't being addressed when really everything that's currently possible at the moment or top priority (of a long list of high priority items) is already being done.

      Brilliant organization, best leadership

Jan 16, 2021 - Senior Software Engineer in Vancouver, BC

      Pros

The company is rapidly growing, so there is a lot of opportunities within the company. When you talk to many employees at Thinkific, you always feel that only A-players are hired. The recruitment process is spectacular, and the onboarding is even better. The company is very aware of its mission and purpose. There is a clear direction to where the company is heading. Top leadership is extremely transparent of what happens behind the scenes. Also, Thinkific is an inclusive, diverse workplace where ideas are encouraged. A great place for people with initiative and a can-do attitude. Thinkific provides all employees needs for them to perform at their best. For example, they will help set up a work from home office, and also provide a budget for a new laptop if needed.

      Cons

The company is learning to manage the rapid growth it is experimenting. For this reason, the company might work today differently to the way it may work in six months time. While it's strictly not a bad thing, it can be overwhelming for employees that struggle outside their comfort zone.

      Walks the talk

      Pros

      - Amazing people -- super smart, talented, collaborative, and fun to work with. Thinkific is a rare place where you can do your best work and do it with people you love spending time with and can learn from. The values you see on the website are very much at the heart of the culture and the criteria which we hire for. - Exciting mission -- empowering entrepreneurs from all walks of life to share their knowledge and build businesses is a great mission to be a part of. - Great leadership -- I've got immense respect for Greg, Miranda, and the whole leadership team. They listen, care, and have a compelling vision for the company.

      Cons

It's a high growth company and while there is a clear vision for the future, there is not a detailed playbook. We are building systems and solving problems as we go. So it is certainly not for those uncomfortable with ambiguity and change.

Working at Thinkific continues to be an amazing opportunity

Jan 27, 2021 - Customer Education Manager in Vancouver, BC

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Great opportunities around every corner and this company rewards taking the initiative - Culture of feedback is strong (practicing radical candor) - Growing support for employees along with employee growth (i.e. our CORE team is scaling at the right rate alongside our overall employee #s) - Get to work with amazing customers who are changing the world through education. - Huge emphasis on inclusion and celebrating diversity

      Cons

      - Maintainers have trouble fitting in (depending on the size of your department). Nailers and scalers fit in best. - Working in ambiguity is expected - if you can do that occasionally, you're fine. - Many teams are forming still - the process must still be built in most departments so you'll need to take an active role in this if you need it for job happiness.
