I worked at Hydro One full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company is in the midst of major change, moving from a provincially-owned utility to a publicly-traded aggregator of utility assets in North America. The CEO was hired to be a mover and shaker. He is highly regarded within the investment community but knows little about the core business. He has a clear vision of what the company will be and communicates this well to the organization.

The majority of employees across the organization are highly committed and enthusiastic. They want the company to be successful and are putting the work into making the transition outlined above.

The company puts safety above all else.

    Cons

Several of the EVPs and a number of the senior management that were hired by the new CEO have no experience in the utility business and don't fully understand many of the challenges that constrain the rapid change they are seeking. The unfortunate perception of many executives and senior leaders coming into Hydro One is that people are old, lazy and change-resistant. In fact, the staff are highly motivated and want to transform the company but regulatory frameworks and security requirements often throttle employees ability to implement change with the speed desired by the senior leaders.

    Advice to Management

Don't assume staff are slow or incompetent. Learn and understand the constraints of the business before assigning blame.

    Pros

Flexible hours, great benefit and salary.

    Cons

No room to growth. Most people stay on the job for life and since no incentives to move up, staff become very good at what they do but that is the only thing they can do.

    Advice to Management

Company needs to transform and make working fun.

I worked at Hydro One full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I worked at Hydro One Brampton. Pros are

    - Great hours from 9 to 5 with 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks
    - Excellent in-house cafeteria that served breakfast and lunch
-Different places around the building where one can get away and relax on breaks and lunches
    - Competitive pay
    - In-house radio station to break out of the doldrums

    Cons

    - Not much room to advance
    - Quite a few people were quite haughty or snobby but they were also plesant and friendly colleagues as well
    - Hydro One is up for sale so there is uncertainty on which employees will be kept, quite a few people on contract
    - Work culture where longer term employees will transfer the work that they do not want to do unto shorter term employees
    - Work load can be high especially in admin. roles

    Advice to Management

    Reverse the cons
