      Data Engineer Interview

      Jun 5, 2022
      Anonymous employee
      New York, NY
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shell (New York, NY) in May 2022

      Interview

I have talked through many people and almost all of them told me that the interview process for shell takes around 1-2 months(For some it was 1 month for others it went as long as 2 months) SHELL has many rounds depending on the profile, and many other factors. For me for all it was a Direct process no 3rd party involved. Also, when I applied around 20 days was left with my NP .So I clearly mentioned that I will be needing an expedited process and an offer letter till my last working day in my previous company if things goes well otherwise I won't be able to proceed. The HR's of shell are really-2 nice.(yes sounds weird but so true..Confirmed from many other new joiners and experienced guys) Also,I would like to add the interview scheduling process is bit different here. There is a team(HR) in Phillipines that handle most of the things and since its a global organisation it takes time for these processes. Coming back to process- For me there were Two rounds 1. Professional Round- 2-5 panel will be there on the virtual call (technical panel -2/3 HR's-2) Its a pure technical round on your expertise and believe me it was a tough one.. 1 hour interview they grilled a lot.Your approach matters they are not looking for exact answer.(the panel themselves mentioned) The panel were supportive and were very clear with what they needed. During my round there were two technical panels both having 10+ years experience 2.Structural Round- 1 hour round (technical+ behavioural) Basically the model behind this interview is C.A.R i.e Capacity, Achievement, Relationship The panel judge you on the basis of these. Note: Please dont take this lightly. Shell has too much weightage for rhis round if you don't clear technical round you can retry after 3 months but if you didn't clear structural round you have to wait 1 year( Hr told me) So prepare well All the questions in this round will be situational/scenario based so answer honestly as per your past IT experience. 2-3 panels

I interviewed at Shell (United States Coast Guard - Air Station Sacramento)

      Interview

The interview process was well-structured and transparent, providing a clear understanding of each stage and expectation. The conversations were engaging and focused on both technical expertise and problem-solving approach. Overall, it was a positive experience that allowed me to showcase my skills and learn more about the company’s culture and goals.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

One key question they asked me was how I design and optimize end-to-end data pipelines for scalability and reliability. They wanted to understand my approach to handling large datasets, ensuring data quality, and leveraging cloud technologies effectively. It was a great opportunity to discuss my hands-on experience with AWS, Databricks, and Airflow.

Good. This was an interview during campus placements and the interview went smoothly. The interviewers were very professional and asked a lot of technical and situation/behavioural based questions to evaluate whether the candidate meets Shell values.
