We have broke ground on our first distribution centre in Atlantic Canada! We are so pleased that Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold, Minister Daniel Allain, and Minister Arlene Dunn joined our President and CEO Horacio Barbeito, our Chief Merchandising Officer Kieran Shanahan, and our Executive Vice President, Transformation Officer John B. on-site to officially break ground in New Brunswick. This new facility in Moncton will create more than 200 local jobs. It will provide fresh and frozen groceries to 43 Walmart stores in Atlantic Canada, speeding up service and improving product availability for our customers. It will also reduce long-haul truck deliveries, removing millions of kilometres from the supply chain each year. Thank you to our associates, the province of New Brunswick, and the city of Moncton! Say hello to Shrey Khullar, a Demand Planning Manager with our replenishment team. Shrey, who moved to Canada from India as an international student, joined us as a Replenishment Analyst in 2018 and has since been promoted twice. Shrey works with merchants, vendors, stores, and distribution centres to ensure our customers have the freshest products available to them every time they walk into a store. “My zeal for the retail industry is rooted in the fact that even though I have no direct interaction with our customers, I’m able to bring food to the tables of thousands of people,” Shrey says. For example, Shrey once received a request from a store in Dryden, a city of about 7,800 in Northwestern Ontario, for halal whole chicken. This item was not regularly offered in that store, but Shrey worked with merchants and vendors to get the product into the Dryden store for customers who needed it. “The store received overwhelming positive feedback, and I was glad to assist my Walmart family,” Shrey says. Thank you Shrey for everything you do for our customers!
Izunna Victor Nwaneli, a part-time cashier at store 1186 in Winnipeg, says he’s struggled with self-acceptance. He felt he needed others to make decisions for him, and had a hard time making healthy food choices. He heard about Walmart Canada’s 21-day wellness challenge using the Thrive app at work and decided to give it a try. The app helps associates track their progress and take manageable steps to meet their wellness goals. “The first step I took was giving gratitude to myself. I had to remind myself that I deserve every bit of encouragement — not just from anyone, but from myself,” Izunna says. He started to swap in healthier ingredients for some of his meals and made time to attend church with his brothers once a week. He has also started saving more for school and puts his phone down at 10 p.m. to help him sleep better. Izunna says taking these steps improved his mental and physical wellness, and now he’s won a $2,000 cash prize! Congratulations!!
As we proudly cheer on Team Canada, we want to share the story of Walmart Canada associate Kris Vriend: our own Paralympic athlete! Kris was in a car rollover accident in 1989, which left her in a coma for a month with a traumatic brain injury. She admits she was angry after the accident, but she wasn’t going to let it stop her from following her dreams. “I wanted to travel but I didn’t have the money to travel, so I thought I would get into sports,” she explains. “Now I can’t run, so I decided to throw.” Kris took up shot put, discus and javelin. She went on to win a bronze medal for Canada in discus at the 1996 Paralympics in Atlanta. She later won more medals for Canada in international competition, including gold in shot put and silver in discus at the 2002 Paralympic World Championships in Lille, France. She also competed at the Paralympics in Sydney (2000), Athens (2004), and Beijing (2008). “Eid means a lot to everybody. It doesn’t matter if you’re living in the Middle East or Southeast Asia, or any part of the world. As long as you’re Muslim, Eid means a lot,” says Walmart Canada category team analyst Ali Jahanzaib. We spoke with Ali and Walmart customer Sundas Iqbal about how they celebrate (Ali and his family pictured below). We also spoke with family-run, local Walmart Canada supplier Amira Enterpises, which supplies our stores with dried fruit, nuts, and other food items used in traditional Eid treats. At Walmart Canada, we know a little help can go a long way. Our associates are our greatest strength, which is why we’re investing in their future with education grants for our graduating high school associates or dependents of Walmart associates. With a second class of high school students graduating during a pandemic, we asked some of our recent scholarship recipients like Shaylon Godse, who worked our Erin Mills Town Centre store in Mississauga, Ont., about their scholarship and graduating in a pandemic. “The Walmart Canada Associate Scholarship helped me immensely. It set me up for success in university as I used the money from the scholarship to pay for some of my books, tuition, and various membership fees for clubs at Wilfrid Laurier University.” Shaylon said it isn’t an easy time for high school students, but there are reasons to be optimistic. “Graduating in a pandemic has made me more resilient,” he explained. “Despite the adversity you are facing right now, it will get better and there have been a lot more opportunities created for university students...
Acting with integrity, just like dad By Charles Jarrett My dad – who I sometimes call Mr. Jay - is my role model. He started his career with the First Bank of Nigeria in the late 70s. He worked at the bank for 35 years, rising through the ranks over the decades. He committed to the company because he felt the company was a good company. During his career at the bank, my dad faced situations that tested his integrity. He was always committed to doing the right thing, and I saw the challenges he went through because he wanted to do things the right way. I saw him go through that, persevere, and become a true leader. He was always at peace because he made sure he did the right thing His commitment to integrity and hard work is the example I follow in my own career. I moved to Canada from Nigeria in 2018, hoping to find work in the oil and gas industry after completing a master’s degree in geophysics in the U.K. That industry, however, was experiencing a downturn at the time and work was hard to come by. I had to figure out what else I could do.
