As we continue to recognize the sacrifices made by our veterans and those who have perished, we want to showcase the work of our Military Employee community (MiLE). MiLE is a group for our current service members, veterans, their families and supporters. Their goal is to create a community where veterans and military family members feel welcome. They look to highlight the unique experiences of our veterans and their family members, and give back to the local and veteran communities through volunteering and mentorship.

Meet Tanya and Adrianna, our Indigenous Peoples and Their Allies (IPTA) co-chairs from Waterloo, Canada. IPTA’s mission is to better enable our Indigenous employees to advance professionally and have open and honest conversations while increasing the awareness of Indigenous peoples for all employees. “IPTA is great due to it being for Indigenous employees and allies. It is the first of its kind at Manulife/John Hancock. It is a safe space to share information regarding what it is like being Indigenous and for Indigenous allies to ask questions they may not have felt comfortable going elsewhere to ask.”

Meet Sören and Stef, our co-chairs for Professionals Reaching Out for Unity and Diversity (PROUD) Hong Kong. We asked them what PROUD is all about: “PROUD Hong Kong is committed to building a more inclusive environment for employees that identify as LGBTQ+ and our PROUD allies, many of whom have family, friends and colleagues who identify as LGBTQ+. Through our activities and campaigns, we increase awareness and create a sense of community and mutual support. While we are less than three years old, our efforts were rewarded in July 2020 when we were named a finalist of Community Business 2020 Hong Kong LGBTQ+ Inclusion Awards in the best newcomer category. Over the past year we have increasingly sought to raise Manulife’s external profile through sponsorships of high-profile events such as PRIDE and community awards as well as joining and promoting key initiatives such as the Interbank LGBTQ+ Forum, where Manulife became the first insurance company to be represented.”

We believe in the strength of diversity and are proud to feature our VIBE Employee Resource Group, which stands for Valuing the Inclusion of Black Experiences. Forming in Toronto in 2017 and now operating across Canada and the US, VIBE aims to better enable our Black employees to advance professionally, to support the aspirations of current and potential employees and to increase awareness of various Black cultures. Their goal is to inform, educate, elevate and inspire each other within our diverse and inclusive culture. We recently set goals to increase BIPOC representation in Leadership roles by 30% by 2025 and to annually hire at least 25% BIPOC talent in our Graduate programs. • For more than 13 years we have been proud to run the MLK Scholars Program across Boston, built on the inspirational values and legacy of its namesake, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Each year we’ve sponsored the employment of over 600 Boston high-school students at dozens of local non-profit organizations, making it one of the largest summer job programs of its kind in the U.S. The scholars join a paid 6-7-week summer internship where we help them develop the skills, networks and connections they’ll need to be successful. This summer, we went virtual! Many of our non-profit partners were able to pivot their programs to continue safe, quality opportunities for the scholars. In addition, we were glad to host 36 scholars and rehire 4 college interns who were former MLK Scholars, who participated in virtual department work, career exploration seminars, and other workshops focused on career development. As we continue to build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workspace, our MLK Scholars Program is a strong pipeline of talent joining our company.
