I worked at Devon Energy full-time

    Pros

Great work life balance. Wellness centre, flex days, benefits, RRSP matching etc. Also, the work is challenging and rewarding and those who perform are rewarded well.

    Cons

Tough times during low oil price environment leads to lay-offs.

I worked at Devon Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Definitely pay their employees in the top quartile, vacation & time off is generous - you can even buy extra vacation. Core work hours somewhat flexible depending on your leader. Coworkers are generally friendly and helpful when required.

    Cons

Devon has documented its core values and attributes for leaders and contributors but these are not really taken seriously by many employees. I joined Devon as they aligned to my work ethic but was surprised that it was lip service. Nothing really changed in the 6 years I was there and it really only got worse after 6 rounds of downsizing in 3 years. In hindsight, glad I was downsized.

    Advice to Management

    Practise what you preach.

I worked at Devon Energy full-time

    Pros

Devon Energy is a company that has essentially "got it right"; the management team understands and have developed an excellent company structure, which is agile and changes with demand.

Employees who are professional, hard working, self motivated with a positive attitude will strive.

    - Highly developed management
    - Invested in their employees
    - Professional culture
    - Progressive outlook
    - Competitive salary

    Cons

For the most part, Devon has few cons relevant to everyone. Generally, misalignment with the Employee Attributes will cause frustration.

    - Upper management doesn't always do as they say
    - Mid level management not consistent with each other
    - Very high demands with goals and objectives which will frustrate some people
    - The company maintains agility; employees who can't adjust to change will struggle
    - Employees who are not highly motivated will likely be pushed out

    Advice to Management

    - Ensure you do as you say
    - Work on creating consistency among your mid level management, especially in handling of goals and performance reviews
    - Keep an eye on your mid level managers over-focusing on negative events. A single complaint against an employee should not outweigh several positive reports.
    - Keep up the agility and continue to push the attributes; this is working very well.

    Cons

Departments are structured about who you suck up to and favoritism. Even if youre a good worker, if you get on the bad side of management they will not hesistate to let you go.
