      Customer Assistant Interview

      Apr 25, 2017
      Anonymous employee
      Stoke-on-Trent, England
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Tesco (Stoke-on-Trent, England) in Apr 2017

      Interview

Applied online for a temporary nights part time shift at an Extra store. Received a phone call about a week or so later. I was so nervous because my previous jobs had always been on recommendation and so never really had an interview before. Arranged for a 1 to 1 interview a few days later. I was told it will last 1hr 30mins. (It lasted just over 2hrs). The time was at 11pm because I applied for night shifts so you are interviewed by night store manager. When I arrived I was taken to wait in the staff canteen for about 15 mins. The manager then gave me some health and safety forms to fill in (just tick boxes regarding to if you have any illness, and then what you should/shouldn't do when using equipment, etc) Anyway another 10 minutes later the manager told night supervisor to take me to the shop floor to do some sample work for 30 mins. Basically you just stock shelves, rotate the stock, flatten cardboard. Easy and straightforward. After that was taken back to be interviewed by the manager. It was very relaxed and informal. Had a chat about if I found the work difficult and then asked about what shifts I could work, plans for holidays, if this would be my primary job, benefits - discounts, bonuses, pension, pay rates, etc. I just showed a lot of interest in the job, asking questions. I said like I would be interested in a permanent full time contract if it were to be available. Told him I hardly had any absences in my past work and throughout my studies. He said there are opportunities to be trained for managerial positions. Anyway at the end of the interview he basically said he was happy to offer me work and told me to go to the first induction day in a couple of days. There will be 3 induction days. The first is like watching health and safety videos and I think you have to fill in forms since he told me to bring my bank details and national insurance card. It will be for most of the day. Mine is at 11am to 7pm. Not sure if the other 2 days follow but you will be told after day 1. (Sorry to go a bit off subject but I just wanted to say when I left the store just after 1AM, it started snowing, like heavy flurry of snow...in stoke...at the end of April!!! I had a bit of banter with some of the staff...very easy to talk to and friendly. Made me feel very welcome.) By the way, I was never asked the typical questions like "tell me about yourself", "what do you know about Tesco?", "what are your strengths/weaknesses?", "why do you want to work for Tesco?"
