      Technical Support Engineer Interview

      Oct 26, 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Sunrise, FL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Fortinet (Sunrise, FL) in Jun 2016

      Interview

I first got a mail from a technical person asking for my availability for a phone interview. The interview went for like half an hour with good amount of questions testing my roundabout knowledge in Networking. The very next day morning I got a call from a Fortinet HR asking for my availability for a Skype interview with a technical person for an hour. I should say the interview was pretty good and again like the first interview, this too had me testing my overall knowledge in Computer Networking. And the last few minutes had the Hiring Manager talk about the position and he ensured me that they will say a decision in exactly a week's time. A week passed by and exactly at the end of the 7th day, I got a mail from the HR asking for my availability to speak with her. I was bouncing here and there that she was going to break the good news. I took the call and she asked me some behavioral questions and said they are interested in getting me on-board. I was jumping with joy. The same day she initiated the background verification process. Then things slowly started to go south from here. After the background verification got over I mailed her about further steps. At that time, I had an important document to be received from the government pertaining to my eligibility to work in US. She said that she wanted me to immediately let her know once I receive that document. I did do that and waited for her reply. A week passed by, I again mailed her about what was happening and what were the next steps in the on-boarding process. She replied saying a few key people were on vacation and she will let me know in a week's time. Two weeks passed by and there was zero communication for her end. I was starting to get tensed as I literally stopped applying to different companies and was not getting calls as well. I mailed her again and finally she drops the bomb by saying they have put the position on hold and that they would consider me for that position once it opens up again. I was totally shattered as this wasted more than a month of my wait. All that was left was nothing but extreme disappointment and the pain of starting to apply and do the process all over again, let alone the fact that I had to find a job within a specific deadline. Never give hopes to a candidate only to crush the same in the end and I can promise you that this does have a psychological effect on the person as a whole.

I spent more than 20+ hours on 5+ interviews, including a 5 hour take home test and going to their office for 3 consecutive interviews. Then I waited 1.5 months for a rejection without explanation. No respect for our time.

      Interview

Great interview experience! The focus was on networking fundamentals like LAN, OSPF, TCP/IP, and the OSI model. The questions were technical but fair, testing both theoretical knowledge and practical application. A great way to assess networking expertise.

After first questions, "what is the 7 OSI layers and the sample protocol for each layer", the interviewer told me show him my keyboard, because he felt, I am looking too much bottom of the screen. then he asked me to share my screen. and he said that I am using chatgpt for cheating. That chatgpt question was VRF leaking related to my task for my current job. I have more that 15 years experience as a network engineer and consultant. I spent time to pass NSE4 certificate for this role requirement and planned to relocate to Ottawa. the interviewer stop interview easily. The interviewer didn't even turn his webcam.
