      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One in Aug 2025

      Interview

Started with initial code assessment, looks like autogenerated by the system. I was able to get 2 correct, 1 attempted and 1 too hard to attempt(4 in total). Followed by a call with recruiter to setup next round of interviews. Totally there were five interviews. In-person coding interview, 2 behavioral, 1 technical case interview and 1 Design and Architecture. All interviews are an hour each with 10 mins at the end to ask questions to the interviewer. During behavioral, interviewer would take notes all the time to capture your response. Overall experience was neutral. As I felt it all depends on the interviewer taking the interview from other end with his background and skills to match yours. Recently, technical landscape has widened. If you are skilled in application development and if you are getting an interviewer with infrastructure background then naturally you will not be able to impress with the details you give. Expect few minutes delay in them(interviewer) joining the call.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      1. Typical code signal assessment with 4 questions. First 2 easy, 3rd question was hard and 4th was of medium complexity. 2. In person code interview with medium complexity. Make use of library functions if possible. 3. Behavioral (Using STAR methodology) - Share details on the challenge you faced with your team and how did you solve that. Tell me a time how you convinced a stake holder to agree on your approach. Tell me a time how you handled conflict with a team member. 4. Case interview - Improving efficiency of a banking chatbot and tracing the code on results and suggesting possible improvements. Less math and more technical. 5. Technical design and architecture - Design and architect a banking system.

      Interview

Got a call from recruiter after few days of application submission. She has explained the role and I did gave my background and explained why I am looking for a job change and what I can offer, how I fit for the role etc.,. It went well, then after few days I received an email from recruiter stating that the hiring manager is looking for more of an individual contributor than a manager. I have 25+ years of IT in different business domain. Working as a IT manager for a fortune (under 10) company, much larger than Capital One and better benefits. MS & Bachelor's in Computer Science from top 20 US university etc., But, I rather wanted to work on latest tech stack and Captial One job offered it. I did say that in an email that I still stay hands-on even though it is not or regular 100% on a daily basis. Then, she said the hiring manager wants me to take a Hackerank test, which is mostly for developers. I have accepted the challenge, did complete the test, got the Outputs of my program as expected. The second challenge was bit more complicated. I had used google to implement the solution but got it working. 'Show me one developer in the world who wouldn't use Google to implement the solution'. Next day, recruiter sent an email stating that I did not pass the Hackerank test. Didn't give me any details of where I actually have failed. Here's my take about what went on, the hiring manager was intimidated by my profile, so, he wanted to avoid my candidacy. His 1st attempt is by stating that he rather want a individual contributor than a well educated & qualified candidate with such a back ground as mine. When the 1st attempt didn't work, he made a 2nd desparate attempt of having an experienced manager to take a beginner's code challenge. I hire the candidates who are better than me. That's how the hiring should be than feeling intimidated by the qualifications of the candidate. Overall a negative experience. I still sent a thank you email to recruiter for providing me a newer experience.
