Pros

Now called Sony Interactive Entertainment, here are just a few of benefits to working at their headquarters in Japan: 1) No suits and flexible hours You have to show up to work a certain number of hours per month, but it's much better than the traditional 9-5 at some other Japanese companies. Video game companies in general tend not to require suits in Japan. 2) Global and Diverse team Anyone in video games that wants to leverage English or foreign language ability can find a place at PlayStation HQ since they're working with a number of organizations and branches worldwide 3) Internal movement and opportunities Fairly responsive to employee desires for trying new opportunities within the company 4) Open to new ideas (relatively) Compared to other Japanese companies, can be receptive to ideas or prototypes made by employees (on employee's own time)

Cons

1) Management doesn't advocate for workers Various reasons for not improving working conditions, reducing overtime hours or improving efficiency are present among middle management. Upper management is receptive, but culture of asking workers to put up with it and push through. 2) Not yet global Lack of understanding about global markets in a majority of job tiers so most likely you'll end up working with individuals who've made their entire careers in Japan and don't quite understand the global picture for games industry just yet 3) Hours Overtime hours are a significant problem depending on department

Good, for a Japanese Game Company

Pros

Compared to other video game companies, particularly console companies, Sony is a comfortable work environment. The hours are somewhat flexible, and taking vacation is not frowned upon. The pay is generous, and the benefits from being a part of the Sony group are nice.

Cons

Because it is so comfortable, no one leaves, which, combined with a large amount of corporate overhead and few runaway success titles means that the environment is static. Expect to remain where you are, both in terms of salary and position, for a long time after joining no matter how well you perform. There are few opportunities to advance, and annual pay reviews are essentially a list of excuses for why your salary will remain the same, because the company does not have the money to raise it and has not for years. Middle management is also atrocious to their employees, making maintaining motivation a struggle. Those who do leave, leave because they are seeking a challenge or a career versus security.

Pros

Great culture and teams. People want to work there and (mostly) like working there, and it shows. Fantastic place to learn about the games industry. Every day brings something new.

Cons

Career paths are unclear. Hard to know if you are learning transferable skills. Job titles do not match industry norms. Business units are heavily siloed. Knowledge sharing is the exception not the norm. Managers have good technical skills but poor management skills. IT is unresponsive and restrictive.
