Pros

Some of the staff are really great. They know what they're doing, are helpful to others, and respectful when asking for help. There are some exciting projects to work on. But, you'll have to work hard to get assigned to those projects.

Cons

Some of the staff are simply incompetent. They survive by leeching off their peers, and management is too detached to notice or deal with this effectively. Management consistently picks the wrong solution, sometimes even for problems that don't exist. Similarly, management seems to have no coherent strategy for which features to pursue -- instead we pursue all of them, poorly. This damages the reputation of the team, which is incredibly demotivating. Projects are regularly dropped at the 80% mark because a new priority has risen to the top -- typically, a political priority. Management seems to be most concerned with ingratiating themselves with their peers than the performance of the team, or delivering the best solutions possible.

Pros

great DBAs (maybe not the top 5%, but everyone's solid), good salary, solid commitment to learning and continuous training. very good business model (remote database admin by a top caliber team)

Cons

very hierarchical structure, with little possibility for advancement into management unless you are in "the club". marketing team and HR push a vision of pythian that is almost cult-like and comes off as very naive and fake. senior management team is incredibly closed off and clearly not comfortable interacting with regular workers. the environment will be familiar to anyone who's done military service.

Pros

Flexible hours, and free drinks (If local)

Cons

It's all glitter, until you look behind the curtain and see how much of a mess it is. Why else would a 20 year old company be in shambles and needing investors? Managers expect miracles from you, but don't give you the time to do it. This leads to poor performance, and makes you look like a complete dolt when you can't deliver. There is too much of a "bro" culture, and low-level employee cliques that are good at sucking up to exec and C levels.

Pythian Response

Pythian is proud to have been in business for over 20 years. We work in the fast paced technology field, and, like every other business in this field, we must to continue to grow and evolve in order to keep pace with the ever changing market demands - and that includes business investment and adaptations to technologies and services at strategic inflection points of our business lifecycle. We have been very open and transparent of Pythian’s ongoing plans with our global employees and while we realize it can be uncomfortable for some people, others see this planning as an opportunity for growth. Successful investment will no doubt be beneficial for Pythian and all our global colleagues worldwide and we are excited about these next stages! Regarding your comment on our Managers, leadership is difficult at the best of times. Our leadership team is made up of experienced professionals committed to building and investing in our people to exceed customers expectations. As we all know, market changes happen quickly and we work hard to adjust to our client needs. Unfortunately, this does cause friction points at times for our employees as we navigate through together. We do appreciate your feedback and should you have any further comments, please feel free to reach out directly to me at graham@pythian.com
