Excessive Micromanagement

Pros

The pros to working with this organization was the ability to support active duty and reserve military members and their families.

Cons

There was excessive micromanagement. Supervisor was envious of my academic credentials. Although I worked from home and was very dependable, supervisor constantly texted and sent email messages requesting my minute-by-minute work activities. Lastly, I wasn't allowed to use any of may leadership skills.

Thank you for your feedback. I agree that one of the best aspects of the work we do is the satisfaction that comes from being able to serve America’s military families, and knowing we are helping them become stronger, more stable, and more secure so they can thrive, not simply get by, in the communities they worked so hard to protect. I know those that work remotely experience different challenges from those at our headquarters, but no matter where one works, we seek to foster an environment where our team members feel supported and valued. I will pass along your feedback to those entrusted to lead our regional teams.

Pros

The stated goals are to help military families and some do get some help.

Cons

Operation Homefront has become corrupt. They laid off numerous employees from 2016 to 2017 in order to raise the pay of numerous senior executives by outrageous amounts. They use the stories of truly devastated wounded warriors to raise money and funnel shameful amounts to senior executives. Additionally, they raise money to purchase backpacks for military children, then they require field personnel to raise money from other organizations to pay their headquarters back for those backpacks. This is a shell game which helps enable the ridiculous salary increases. $2 of backpack money is donated for every $1 of backpacks purchased. Shameful. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS ORGANIZATION!

Thank you for providing your thoughts. I am immensely proud of what the Operation Homefront team has done, and is doing, to meet the needs of our military families and am saddened to hear you feel we have missed or are missing the mark. I hope you can take satisfaction in knowing you helped deliver some highly valued programs to a very special and deserving group of our fellow citizens during your tenure.

Great place to help others while forgetting yourself.

Pros

Great opportunities to create positive change within the military community. Amazing staff of intelligent, caring, and dedicated individuals.

Cons

In my opinion lower level employees have absolutely terrible working conditions. Completely understaffed and underpaid. Operation Homefront regularly gaslights employees when talks of low pay are mentioned by claiming that they “look at the market”. This is a complete lie as organizations are offering upwards of 10k-15k more a month for the same exact positions. I could not recommend avoiding this organization as an employee enough. You do not matter unless you are part of the senior team/ upper management and you will consistently be told the opposite while simultaneously seeing through action that numbers, donor dollars, and upper management/senior matter more than anything else. It is also extremely hard to seek sustainable employment when the org. does not allow supervisors/directors/coworkers to be a reference, trapping you in a never ending cycle of toxic employment.

Thank you for your feedback. I completely agree that, as an organization, we are making the lives for our military families better and that our talented and dedicated staff make this important work possible. Compensating our staff fairly for all they do for this very special and deserving group of our fellow citizens has been and remains a top priority which is why we conduct regular reviews to ensure we remain competitive with industry standards. Regarding your statement on references, it is standard policy across the non-profit industry to have all communications about former employees directed to Human Resources who provide confirmation of employment.
