I have been working at Mendix full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

High growth company, market leading platform, talented international team across all disciplines. Great culture. Backed by Siemens, with 'freedom to act'.

    Cons

    Nothing distracting for self-propelled professionals.

    Advice to Management

Keep the culture and enterpreneurial 'doer' mentality while growing

I have been working at Mendix full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I've worked at Mendix for over 3 years, and I’ve enjoyed working there so far. Building a low-code platform brings a unique set of challenges, which requires strong engineering and problem-solving skills because of the high abstraction level required for the platform. The product and team are growing rapidly, which brings a lot of opportunities but also poses some challenges. - Great culture, everyone (including... management) is easily approachable and willing to listen to feedback. - Lots of things are possible in Mendix if you have ideas to improve the platform you can get the room to execute and make an impact. - Genuinely nice, smart and driven colleagues. - Freedom as a team, you can decide on working hours, working from home and control your scope. - Technical career track, you can keep growing on the technical level. No need to take a less technical role just to grow in salary! - Great initiatives like book clubs, crafting days (10% time) that you can leverage to learn - Training budget ( ‎‎€1850 as of 2020) that you can spend how you see fit. - A lot of stuff happening, never a dull day.

    Cons

    - Rapid growth causes growing pains, both in the internal organization as well as on the development of new products. - Equipment to facilitate remote meetings could be improved. - It’s great to have a technical career path, but make sure that managers/leaders .reserve time to help people to take the next step.

    Advice to Management

    - I appreciate all of the efforts that are put into scaling the organization while staying true to our culture and values. - Make sure to keep asking for feedback, like e.g. in R&D all-hands meetings. This will help signaling issues around rapid growth.

I have been working at Mendix full-time

    Pros

Many smart & very smart coworkers The trust the company has in its employees is truly admirable As little office politics as possible

    Cons

Yes, the accelerating growth is causing growing pains and the trust thing also results in mistakes, but ultimately they're trying to do the right thing.

    Advice to Management

Some structure and processes improvements will go a long way

I have been working at Mendix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Fun and smart colleagues. - Good work environment. Although currently too crowded, the office is still a nice place to work and will grow with additional floor soon. - Primary benefits are okay.

    Cons

    - Unit cannot keep up with the growth of the company at all. There are really inexperienced employees on management positions and this leads to low performance and many questionable decisions. - Bad communication within unit/company. - Secondary benefits pretty poot (in R&D). - Asking employees to fill in positive Glassdoor review.

I worked at Mendix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good work life balance Lots of opportunity to learn outside of work through the training budget

    Cons

Team hierarchy is unnecessarily overcomplicated. Team will have a scrum master, a team lead and a tech lead. There will be a product manager, delivery manager, unit director. And then the executive board. This for teams of size 2-5 members. There have been tech teams with more managers than tech folk. Most of middle management is very difficult to work with. They take technical decisions without much knowledge.... Unrealistic deadlines are committed to without consulting the tech teams. Additionally, a different manager comes asking for update on a task every 10 minutes. Salaries are well below market rate which is making it difficult to retain people who have been in the company for a short time, especially migrants. A lot of the tenured tech folk are stuck in a rut and have a "this is the way we do it" attitude. Not encouraging of new ideas. Senior management is very disconnected from people working at ground zero and have no commitments towards operational efficiency. Decision makers around a person's career path do not know the company policy around it. Poor communication. Stakeholders sitting next to each other do not talk among themselves and typically relay their messages through others. Recruitment works at a snail's pace. Typical response time of an email is 2-3 weeks after about half a dozen followups.

I have been working at Mendix full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Mendix selects the "best-of-the-best" to fill their roles. Not only looking for an individuals's abilities, but also their personality. It has a unique culture that allows employees to be who they are instead of conforming to a static way of doing things. This ideology promotes collaboration within departments and across departments; keeping the company innovative and exciting.

    Cons

Not a good environment for people that like to be micro-managed.

I have been working at Mendix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Technically challenging work - Smart colleagues

    Cons

    - Unclear career paths - Unclear product vision and roadmap - No focus on individuals - Noisy, crowded and distracting office environment - Working remotely is not allowed (lack of trust, flexibility, communication?)

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing on extreme growth, start focusing on the problems it causes. The quality of life, communication and the product are suffering.

I have been working at Mendix full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nice colleagues, good professionals Interesting product

    Cons

Problems with management in Quality engineering. Constantly pushy, passive-aggressive, ignoring and squeezing. Using people as a resource, but covering it with nice language. Few engineers were pushed away and have left company during the last half-year because of such despotism there.

I have been working at Mendix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Easy to get the tools you need - choice of laptop, AWS accounts, development tools, almost no bureaucracy - Challenging projects to work on. - Encourages personal growth. Besides the training budget and crafting days, Mendix lets you to have training when needed for a new project. - Good office facilities, free coffee, free drinks and beer, almost-free lunches with healthy options. - Very easy to reach other... teams and have a discussion if something is broken or needs to be changed. - Restructuring because of the Siemens acquisition and expansion - it's a complex process but I can already see the benefits. - No overtime or timesheets - Fun culture

    Cons

    - Some internal components were hastily written, then shelved. Often need to support them, stopping all ongoing development and trying to figure out how to build the darn thing. It's already being addressed by implementing proper CI/CD and documentation for everything. - Office issues (although it's already being addressed by expanding the Rotterdam office): building is becoming crowded; open space layout can be... very loud. - Dogfooding sometimes becomes extreme, with people building complete backend systems in Mendix even when it's not the right tool for the job. - Event driven development; often maintenance and ongoing projects have to be postponed in order to prepare an event.
