Terrible, Inept Leadership

Pros

You get to work with talented and personable colleagues. The UX studies themselves are also interesting and you are able to work directly with high-end clients.

Cons

The management is absolutely terrible. It is a small, super niche company with <10 employees that is led by the founder. While intelligent and knowledgeable about UX subject matter, the leadership is wildly inept at basic communication and proper guidance for the employees. Frustratingly, he creates positions that he himself does not know what they should entail, and then berates the individual(s) when they "don't get it right" or can't "just figure it out." As a highly educated and capable professional, it was disparaging for this supervisor to treat me in a passive aggressive manner when I failed to read his mind or annoyed him when I asked questions to clarify vague tasks. Furthermore, I was told to do "important" things like beer runs for the office fridge, putting in endless complaints to maintenance for the office temperature, and putting together IKEA office furniture. In one-on-one meetings, he expressed the desire to receive feedback. However, when given feedback regarding on his communication deficiencies and general lack of ability to treat his underlings with respect, it was clear he was unable to handle constructive criticism and would then treat you in an even more passive aggressive manner. Additionally, the owner appeared to demonstrate insecurity and vanity, hiding behind his designer brand clothing and his mid-day gym sessions with a personal trainer rather than be available for his staff, invite questions, and foster a positive work environment for all employees, rather than just his favorites. In my experience, this was by far the worst manager I have ever had. In working here, one feels not valued and is riddled with a sense of walking on eggshells around a man-child who rides extensive power trips around people who could, in general, not be less impressed by him and his facade of status.

Thank you for your comment. We also agree that the employees here at MeasuringU are talented and professional. We work hard to select the right candidates and provide the right balance of direction and autonomy. But we’re not perfect. We appreciate the work you did for us as Operations and Administrative Assistant and understand that the person who last held your role and performed the duties you described left you with big shoes to fill. At a small company we often have to wear many hats and pitch in to help whenever possible. We do what's necessary and sometimes that means stretching our job descriptions. As it’s been over a year since you’ve worked with us, we trust you've found a place that better suits you and your particular work style.

Pros

This job is a perfect transition into the UX field. The owner will hire anyone looking to work less than market rate, and the title and company on your resume will give you the in for recruiters and credibility for other companies.

Cons

Company owner looks to hire qualified and experienced researchers for the minimum possible salary. I was treated harshly when negotiating my rate after receiving a competing offer and it was clear that candidates who disclosed "high" salary requirements in the application process were removed from consideration. Despite the low compensation, employees were expected to prioritize the job over personal and familial obligations, all while the owner worked 4 day weeks all ski season. The company owner had no qualms firing long term employees with mere hours to collect belongings, while accusing employees leaving the company with two weeks notice of being disloyal. If you need an in to the UX Research field and are willing to tolerate low pay and poor treatment, this job will be the resume builder you need to move on to a better position - just be aware that what you will need to put up with in the meantime is not industry standard

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. While we certainly have a different perspective on the events you recall, it’s clear you had a negative experience which we believe is atypical. We understand that discussions about pay, even while innocuous, can seem hostile, especially for applicants early in their career. Our pay policies are both fair and transparent. We post the salary range for the job and links to the latest UXPA salary survey in the application process so applicants can see up to date information on what people with similar experience in different geographies report making. According to our records from 2016 we matched the compensation in the competing offer you referenced which provided you with an above average salary for an entry level candidate. At MeasuringU we hire both experienced researchers and are proud to give a chance on candidates looking to enter the UX research field. We provide extensive training and mentorship but not everyone is a good fit and can struggle with client communication and deadlines. Working at a leading UX research agency provides researchers with unparalleled opportunities to work with the largest names in technology. But certain aspects of a research agency can be hard, especially for those right out of school, such as the unpredictable workloads at some times of the year and quick deadlines from clients. We have a dedicated research project manager and lead researchers to help mentor newer employees and help balance workloads. To offset our busier times, we encourage employees to take the time they need through our unlimited vacation policy. Long weekends fishing, skiing, taking care of family or weeks-long trips to Europe are regular occurrences here. We believe in fostering employee growth. The employees that have 5+ years of experience at MeasuringU see working here as more than just a line on their resume. We wish you continued success in your career.

Pros

If you love to wear many hats, and work on big projects for high profile clients, this is a great job for you. The office environment is usually very positive and friendly. The company is pretty friendly to hybrid employee work, and likes to throw fun parties. You're bound to have at least some fun at work when things aren't in crunch mode.

Cons

Not entirely a con because I appreciate the transparency, but being a small company, it tends to be pretty clear when the company is doing well, and when it's struggling. I imagine this is a common rollercoaster with ups and downs that smaller less stable companies have to deal with. When the company is not doing as well, work life balance is sacrificed, the pressure to put in extra hours is palpable, and I feel the judgment when time is taken off. They have an unlimited pto policy which on paper is pretty cool, but many employees feel pressured into taking less time off.
