Talented team struggles under chaotic leadership and low morale

Pros

- There are still some genuinely kind, talented people here who care about the product and the customers. - The product itself is actually very good, which makes the rest of the situation even more frustrating. - The company recently raised more funding, so hopefully that gives it some time to sort itself out. - Benefits like the new cat bonus and product discounts are nice.

Cons

- Leadership is the biggest problem by far. The CEOs are not respected, and it is hard to take them seriously. One seems to think shouting, panic, and acting like a discount Elon Musk counts as leadership. The other mostly appears to go along with whatever is being shouted the loudest that day. - Decision-making is a mess. Things either move painfully slowly or change direction every few hours. The result is the same either way: delays, confusion, and people wasting time on work that gets thrown away almost immediately. - “Urgency” is used constantly, but it usually just means chaos. There are endless meetings, sudden changes, and a general sense that nobody at the top really knows what they are doing. - The atmosphere is miserable. People are stressed, demotivated, and worn down. Crying at work should not be normal, but here it somehow is. - Favouritism is obvious. People who keep their heads down and say yes to everything seem to do better than people who actually challenge bad ideas or try to get things done properly. - A lot of people have either left, are trying to leave, or are mentally checked out. It is very hard to stay motivated when the mood around you is so negative. - There is no proper HR support, which makes the whole thing feel even more amateur.

Pros

Pet friendly office. Decent learning budget if you use it.

Cons

Founders are total narcissists. One CEO in particular micromanages employees within an inch of their lives, to the point of insisting that everybody uses the same acronyms. Forces employees to join long, pointless meetings without any clear goal, where the most minute of details is discussed constantly. Then turns around and wonders why people aren’t productive and makes them take the fall for bad business decisions. Culture is rotten to the core — as a company it claims to put customers first. Couldn’t be further from the truth — decisions like making it hard for people to cancel their subscription, by phoning up, are regularly discussed. History of hiring and promoting people who are great at posturing, with near to zero experience of working at e commerce companies. If you have any amount of self esteem and want career progression, avoid this place.

Pros

If you love cats you’ll enjoy talking about them daily, the salary is reasonable, and the contractual hours can be good if you’re based in the UK or South Africa, and don’t mind weekend work.

Cons

I worked in the customer service dept and unfortunately, my experience was not positive. The turnover rate is very high for a reason. The culture is dehumanising with unrealistically high expectations and frequent changes to goals without clear communication. Processes were disorganised, and despite claims of transparency, decisions were often made behind closed doors and changes were launched with no warning/ chance for discussion or opinion sharing. There’s an expectation to regularly work beyond your contracted hours, and when customer inbound volumes spike to the point of the team being unable to keep up, the blame is put on the team rather than on planning or leadership decisions- even when productivity and quality targets are being met. Promotions don’t always feel merit-based; bias plays a noticeable role, and overall growth opportunities are very limited. They tend to hire externally rather than grow the existing internal talent which is very demoralising.
