You're 100% right about working weekends, it sucks and almost nobody wants to do it. For that reason, we've been very intentional over the last year about reducing after hours support calls and about making it worthwhile, money wise, for anyone who is on-call.
Our on-call improvements are not perfect, but we're constantly working to make on-call better. Your feedback, along with other comments and ideas we've heard, has helped us make some major changes over the last several months. Our goal is that nobody ever feels like you felt about not having time for yourself.
The IT Industry is a double-edged sword when it comes to on-call, after hours and weekend work. While few like to do it, I think everyone realizes it's necessary sometimes and nearly every IT job I've seen has some sort of on-call. We're always trying to make it a little easier on people and feedback helps.
