Old school manufacturing company

Pros

There are some nice people that work there. Benefits are good.

Cons

It's an old school manufacturing company. It's normal to see people who have been there 15+ years. Lots of older people at the company and not enough people in there 20s, 30s, or even 40s. They need some new blood at that company, but most of the young people that join soon end up quitting or getting fired because the management is unbearable and unprofessional. There's too much middle management. It seems they keep promoting people to team leader or director roles just because they've been there 15-20 years instead of on their merit. It's gotten to the point that there's too much management and not enough people actually doing work. I've also seen a lot of people act extremely unprofessional, be rude, and harass other coworkers right in front of their managers and the managers don't do anything. A lot of managers aren't willing to help you grow or care about your advancement--they kind of just want you to stay in the position/role you're in. This makes it very difficult to move up. People are quick to throw you under the bus for when things go wrong, but quick to take credit when things go right. You have to really watch what you say because there's a lot of company politics and you don't know who's going to whistle blow.

Pros

The benefits are spectacular, even after the layoffs and the cuts, still better than many places that I have worked. The on-site daycare is amazing, and the food is great. On-site gym and massage therapist. Like acting or politics, if you make it there, you have a good life. Also like acting, for every success story, there's dozens of failure stories.

Cons

It's the most dysfunctional, political, numbers-driven place I've ever been. Day 1 you sign a waiver to exceed the provincial max for overtime. If you don't, start looking for another job. A very strict environment, be at your desk early or get written up. Use that on-site massage therapist and it goes overtime? Get written up. 4-hour meeting with 30 people in a small room with the door closed, so you excuse yourself to pee and stretch your legs? Written up. Everything there involves the managers treating you like a subordinate; my manager skipped a critical supplier meeting on my 3rd day to get his weekly massage, leading to a mixup with confidential material, and I got dragged in front of HR on my 4th day. The politics between departments and between levels of management are almost cartoonishly bizarre. People said not to apply there, but I was swept up in the amazing benefits and pay. But it was a horrible experience that ended with a group layoff, and not too soon.

Pros

OT is generally available, good if you want to put in hours. Team members across the board are polite and helpful, easy to get along. Old designers are very knowledgeable and will share knowledge most of the time - unfortunately most will retire within the next 5-10yrs.

Cons

Management/team leads are mostly made of yes-men who don’t like to make decisions, leading to constant paralysis in projects across the board. Or, they constantly play devil’s advocate to see who’s smarter without actually making a real point. Pay levels are vast and severely inconsistent with skill sets, efficiency, and ability. You make more money as a public school teacher looking at raises. Raises are sub-inflation (1-2%) even during normal times for a solid performance rating (not counting recent high inflation numbers). Team leaders are too afraid to assign any rating higher than Solid Performer. Only way to get actual raises is to leave the company and come back. Upper management say work from home didn’t work without getting proper software or hardware, and concluded it “doesn’t work”. So many young people left there’s almost no one under 30yrs old. Husky IMS/Technologies has degraded over the last 5-10yrs and currently upper management hasn’t changed course with their strong-man attitude.
