Pros

You get discounts on products and on drinks etc and some staff members were lovley

Cons

If you become manager you’ll be thrown in the deep end and if you need any help good luck cause you’ll be left to it and recieve no help. The pay rise from sales assistant to retail manager isn’t much so for the amount of work you are required to do as a manager the amount you are paid isn’t worth it. I dealt with two major floods at my store and received no help from my cluster manager or area manager. Had to deal with lots of issues and workers all on my own. My store had little staff and too many jobs being given from higher up to do with very little time to do them in. Was in constant catchup.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad to hear you valued the team around you and the colleague discounts, but we’re concerned by your comments about the level of support you received in a management role. Stepping into management should come with clear guidance, structured training, and ongoing support—especially when dealing with serious situations like store incidents or staffing challenges. It’s disappointing to hear that you felt left to manage these pressures alone, and that communication and assistance from senior leadership did not meet expectations. We also recognise your point regarding the balance between responsibility and compensation. Feedback like this is important as it helps highlight where we need to better align pay, workload, and support for our managers. Your experience with resourcing and workload is equally important. Ensuring stores are appropriately staffed and that expectations are realistic is something we continuously review, and your comments reinforce how critical this is. We appreciate your honesty and the contribution you made during your time with us. Your feedback will be shared with the relevant teams to help drive improvements in manager support, communication, and working conditions.

Pros

Field teams often house resilient and loyal employees, despite the chaos in upper management.

Cons

WHSmith houses a culture of pure toxicity. There is zero job security, and rather than coach or communicate clear directives and expectations, they choose to overhaul management teams in all departments. They routinely have mass layoffs in departments from field leadership to corporate office members. In the time I've been away from the company, more than 80% of upper management has been laid off and replaced from outside WHSmith. If you are considering a job with WHSmith, I implore you to run, not walk away from it. There are no positives in taking any management positions in any capacity.
