Pros
Staff discount. Good work/life balance. If your face fits, you'll go far.
Cons
The level of the job means I shouldn't care about work once I walk out of the door, however I am always anxious that one day the axe will land on my job, and I will be facing redundancy or redeployment. The culture of fear over my job has created an unpleasant work and home life for me. No respect from managers. Just spoken to like garbage and expected to do an ever-increasing amount of work with little or no extra support. If your face doesn't fit, you won't go anywhere. Tesco likes to promote itself as inclusive, but the levels of homophobia and transphobia among certain colleagues is off the charts. Even worse, management and senior team turn a blind eye to such remarks, unless they are being specifically directed against a customer or colleague, or done in a way that would make Tesco look bad. But out of earshot of those who it will hurt or offend, homophobia in abstract is a-okay. And don't get me started on discrimination against people with physical or mental impairments. "It feels like Remploy here" is something I often hear the second someone with a disability is employed. Tesco does not encourage colleagues to speak out about such things in a meaningful way. Yes, they have the protector line, and company policy is that you should speak to your line managers (or higher) about issues like this, but when the culture in my store seems to be "don't rock the boat", you have a good idea about what will happen if you do bring these things up.
