Pros

Worked with a great bunch of people, good support from the management team, especially direct managers. Flexible in allowing work-from-home when needed due to sick children or repairs at home. Hourly rate was "good", within average for this type of contract position.

Cons

Lack of documentation to help someone new understand department functions, roles and responsibilities. A lot of red tape to cut through in order to get the resources to do job, which affected ability to meet project deadlines. My role was outside of 'norm" for the department I worked for and they had little knowledge on how to help me obtain the resources, technology and information needed to do the job. Lastly, staff levels were so lean, the people assigned to assist me with the project were frequently pulled and unavailable 75% of the time. Originally accepted job because was told it would become permanent (turned down 2 other offers). I did receive employment offer, but before it could get through all the red tape and final signatures, a hiring freeze was put in place. They were unable to convert me to an employee nor could they obtain the approval to extend the contract. On the plus side, as soon as my managers heard rumors of the hiring freeze, they were transparent and let me know what the outcome might be. My managers did not intentionally mislead me, the circumstances were unforeseen. Contractors be aware...until the ink is dry...

Pros

The team was supportive and willing to answer questions. I gained practical experience in industry research, financial analysis, Excel, and data organization while working on real projects. Managers provided helpful feedback, and the internship was a good opportunity to understand how research and analytical work is completed in a professional environment.

Cons

Some assignments could become repetitive, especially data cleaning, database updates, and reviewing large amounts of information. Deadlines could also be tight during busy periods. Because the internship was relatively short, interns sometimes had limited ownership over longer-term projects.
