Pros

Opens doors for organisations that you would not necessarily get interviews for. Help you write a good C.V.

Cons

FDM is essentially a glorified recruitment company. Whilst the teachers are great and give off the impression they're the only ones who care, the training is nowhere near the value that they place on it with the agreement. Once you're through your training, the likelihood is you will be stuck in 'the pond', an area for employees without a placement yet. There is nothing to do in the pond and it is very much a case of wiling away time. Before you complete your training you're advised to be proactive and contact account managers about positions if there's one you want. This is not the case. Account managers will contact you as and when they need you, and it can be a case of filling any position going. I only had 2 interviews for the role that I was trained for and ended up getting a role that also isn't related to that stream. The atmosphere in the training centre is almost like being at school, being made to feel guilty about certain work or having your top button undone. Leaving one minute early is frowned upon. Whilst I understand they are getting graduates used to a working environment and trying to create standards, it's not how the world works. If you live far away, whilst you're not paying for the travel with the bursary scheme, the notion of having to travel to Leeds to sit on a computer and do nothing is pointless. It's done under the guise that you may be needed in the office for interview, but given that a majority of interviews are done by phone, or most people live within a commutable distance, it seems silly (besides, it's not like you could go out all day every day when you're not earning any money!) The pay is terrible, but that's not what motivates me. They just make things up as they go along, there was no plan in place for moving or when you need to move, just a rough idea. In sum, FDM are just a cattle market, where the Account Managers will only use who you need, and you will get a position based on your own skills and abilities. Unfortunately, it is only due to FDM that many doors opened for such companies. Having said that, I would never ever recommend this experience to a friend, unless there were no alternatives.

FDM Group Response

Thank you for your detailed feedback. I’m glad you recognise the opportunities we provide but it concerns me that you think we don’t care. Ultimately, we are a people business with one goal: to launch your career, and this is what we do for hundreds of people every year. Most of our consultants are indeed placed straight away or even before their training is completed, so they have a placement waiting for them. However, sometimes there is a period of time before or in between placements. You will hopefully understand that this is a function of the market and beyond the control of FDM. During any such time we encourage consultants to take advantage of the further training and coaching that is available – including classroom based training and Pluralsight. We are always looking for ways to improve and welcome all feedback. If you are willing to meet with me to discuss your feedback further, I would welcome the opportunity. Your wellbeing is always our priority. Please email me at jonathan.young@fdmgroup.com Jonathan Young – CIO

Pros

It is a job that pays.

Cons

They will promise you opportunities that don't exist. The company they contract you to will promise you work that you will not be assigned. I was a Java Consultant with a masters degree in Math and certificate in full stack and I was shoved into a manual testing position that required zero coding and constantly dangled automation in front of my face. When I was asked to look at Selenium, I studied it in some of the copious amounts of downtime i had and was reprimanded during the next meeting for 'wasting company time'. I moved from Texas to New Jersey for my first position. After contracts with the company were terminated, I was pulled off my assignment only to be abruptly fired for "lack of geoflexibility" despite willingness to move to several places they do business including NYC and even Denver. There is no accountability from them as the only response they give is "the decision is final". There is no way to appeal a blatant lie. Their company has no integrity and side with business majors over people that know how chemicals and physics and electrical components work just seem like bad life decisions. They will say you can reapply but they won't hire you. They'd full of it at every angle.
