Pros

The workplace is open and genuine. Everyone's voice is heard in technical discussions and team meetings. The technical challenges are very real and usually interesting. The development and operations tools provided are powerful and easily available. Talented colleagues that embody the Amazon leadership principles.

Cons

SDE on-call can be painful, but it's a great learning opportunity and motivator. Something to be aware of. Systems and their interactions are very complex. There won't always be a happy path to find the answers needed to do your job. Expect to spend significant time diving into code and asking questions to learn about how things work. Also a good opportunity to learn and grow. You will work with legacy technology. Amazon systems are powerful but they are not gold plated. Work with other teams can be bureaucratic, slow, painful. My current office building is old, awkward, and not the most comfortable working space. This is especially true when comparing to other Amazon office buildings.

Pros

Really smart people, a lot of opportunity for growth, always encouraged to be innovative, think big, and create something new. Competitive salary and benefits with other major tech companies. 100% self motivating work environment. No dress code and 4 legged friends are welcome.

Cons

You have to be self motivated. NO ONE will hold your hand and tell you that you're doing a great job. If you need constant affirmations from management, this company isn't for you.
