I have been working at CAMH full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Friendly staff. Rewarding work. Above average pay relative to most hospitals.

    Cons

Mired in bureaucracy. A lot more politicking than reasonably needs to be endured. Highly variable experience quality from department to department. Avoid Slaight department like the plague.

I worked at CAMH full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Interesting research programmes in place, decent research facilities in place (esp. for neuroimaging and genetics). A good place to develop technical / research skills in a low-pressure research environment.

    Cons

Hard / impossible to advance without lots of politics, and you will quickly advance into a non-scientific role. Getting stuff done requires a lot of bureaucratic maneuvering. The pace can be slow unless what you want to do is already fully supported by their existing systems which can be quite slow.

I worked at CAMH full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Has a good PR image

    Cons

Very toxic work culture, silo'd departments, too many layers of management, front line staff and research staff treated terribly. It's an embarrassment that they call themselves a mental health institution when they treat staff so poorly.

    I worked at CAMH full-time

    Pros

Benefits and salary. But that's about it.

    Cons

The only way you'll move up is to play the politics game with others, especially those in leadership positions. Some departments are very toxic with poor leadership teams. Only a small percentage truly advance in this organization. Great place to start your career, but that's about it.

I worked at CAMH full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-largest mental health hospital -good stepping stone to apply to other institutions (good on your resume) -your work contributes to help those in need of mental health support -lots of positions (opportunities) -diversity amongst the staff

    Cons

-management is definitely problematic, and HR did not do anything to help protect the employees. We had almost 10 staff who quit in the department due to the new manager was covering for a mat leave, but nothing was done. The new manager was so micromanaging, moody and made people feel incompetent in front of everyone else. -pay is not competitive and you get $1 raise per year. -your status starts as “temporary full time-contract” for 1 yr and it gets renewed every year. You have the chance to become full time permanent if you stay in your role for 4 years, but your clock resets to day 1 if you get promoted. Basically no chance of securing a full time position unless you are looking to advance your career.

I have been working at CAMH full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    - great pay - mat leave (top up) for contract employees - opportunities to move to different departments -ttc accessible - new wellness centre which offers exercise classes at a very affordable rate 10/month

    Cons

    - some bad managers who contribute to a toxic work environment - union and HR are not on your side if you ever need help. -Cafteria can use an upgrade - old buildings have rodent problems
