Pros

Great mission, meaningful product and impact. Generally strong work-life balance, provided you yourself set strong boundaries. Company is generally well-positioned in the market, and is likely to succeed in gaining significant market share.

Cons

Below average pay across the board, poor benefits, no stake in company’s future (not even 401(k) matching). Leadership has said flat out that in order to get what they need from the team, they “don’t need to pay market rate”. Because they pay less than average, the only people they’re able to bring in to fill roles are inexperienced, so people across the company make mistakes that interfere with development. Then, once folks gain enough experience to get a better-paying gig elsewhere, they take it (and good for them!), so turnover is high. Leadership is more interested in closing sales deals and making money than actually making an impact. They love SEEMING like mission-oriented people, but they’re really just in it for the money (which they won’t pass on to you, even after closing a “very successful and big” Series B of funding). Product roadmap repeatedly gets blown up by leadership, as they promise customers things that don’t exist.

Pros

Opportunity to build from the ground up and be part of a fast paced organization. Interesting product and industry.

Cons

Startups are exciting, but this organization does not have a culture nor the leadership team to foster collaboration and success. They never took the time to build this (they don’t have an HR or people team function), so years later there is disfunction and misalignment between teams. The leaders are inexperienced to scale the company appropriately. Improper resource planning results in patching holes and getting by with what they have. This creates inefficiencies, productivity issues, and turnover. Due to the lack of supportive culture or otherwise, employees are rarely recognized for their work and the extra time they put in. Job fulfillment and employee happiness are not valued, just making money and doing so at all costs. Decide on your business strategy and stick with it. There is so much whiplash at this company, if you can’t do it yourself bring in a seasoned C suite exec to help.

Babyscripts Response

Thank you for your honest words. We have certainly experienced a lot of growing pains, especially through the last year and a half of COVID which changed a lot of how we do business. Over the last 6 months, we have ramped up our resource planning and hiring to help alleviate the pressure on the teams and to match our quick growth. We’ve brought on additional leadership to bolster the strength and capability of our team. We’ve built more communication avenues for employees and leadership through frequent all-hands and town halls. We’ve also added a number of benefits to continue the focus on our employees and their wellbeing. It’s unfortunate that you didn’t have a great experience at Babyscripts. We take feedback to heart and are continuing to find ways to build collaboration and improve the employee experience. We appreciate your candid input.
