I have been working at BC Hydro full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

If your looking for a career with a good pension, benefits and time off BC Hydro is one of the best places available to most trades people. Strong union to back you up

    Cons

If you want the most wages possible up front this is not the place for you. A lot of your earnings come in the form of good benefits and the DB pension plan. Also very impacted by provincial politics which can be good or bad.

    Advice to Management

FYI the CEO is no longer Jessica McDonald it is Chris O Riley

I worked at BC Hydro full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Overall work environment was good. Hours were somewhat flexible, and benefits are top notch. Few companies have db pensions anymore. There are a lot of internal job postings and opportunities to do temporary rotations in other groups if you are qualified. For a young Engineer, the options are especially open. There are some very interesting projects and if you're desire is to work in the power industry in... BC, they are the only game in town.

    Cons

Being controlled by the gov't, there are some decisions that seem more political than make sense! There is a lot of middle and high up management that has been around a long time so implementing any new initiatives is a struggle. Even though many things are inefficient, most the long time managers and employees have just accepted that is just the way it is. That is frustrating for anyone who worked in the... private sector or in a small companies. The salary was not great, although my position allowed for some OT, which helped. There are no bonus's and raises are non-existent or very minimal. The only way to get more money is with a promotion but those opportunities are limited and seem to go to the people who have been around the longest. Near all jobs are in Vancouver/Burnaby for professionals, and cost of living there is high.

    Advice to Management

Look at some how some private companies are run and model after them. Be more responsive to change. Look at moving some professional / management jobs to interior BC (Kelowna/Vernon), to help people with cost of living.

I have been working at BC Hydro full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Low-mid level management is somewhat supportive. Good amount of time off.

    Cons

Poor hourly wage. Major wage disparity between management and staff. Front line workers do all the heavy lifting while management collects more than double the salary of their employees. Senior management allows workforce to shrink while continually adding more workload. Overall, senior management is out of touch with the front line.

    Advice to Management

More transparency and more hands-on management would increase morale. Budgets and bonuses are not everything.
