I applied online. I interviewed at updoc (Surry Hills)
Interview
This is probably the most unprofessional place I have interviewed at. Please don't waste your time, genuinely.
Every stage of the process revolved around how to help them improve conversions. The application required submitting a video on how to improve conversion in the product. The next step was a call with the founder, but despite a prep sheet with specific topics, the interview was completely different. No introduction, no pay or company information, just straight to: how would you improve conversions, and give examples again. It was clear he hadn't watched the video I applied with.
Then a mandatory psychometric test that took a very long time and felt unnecessary for a design role. Math, logical reasoning, recorded via a random third-party site.
The take-home assessment was substantial. I spent a long time coming up with solutions, mocked up designs, created personas, and outlined measures for success. They were impressed and called me for a final interview.
They were actually nice in person, but again there was no transparency on pay, no questions about me or what I was looking for, and no opportunity to ask questions until the very last 5 minutes. I presented my work, they asked in-depth questions, and mentioned they had never considered certain UX problems I raised. I was confident I had done a good job.
I got a rejection email about a week later, but the role stayed up for another 3 weeks. Then they requested access to my Figma file that I had already restricted. Makes me think they were just collecting ideas and free work from candidates. I wouldn't want other designers to get taken advantage of.
I went through a tedious interview process where I had to complete an assessment-like task and bring it to the interview and explain it.
While the interview itself wasn’t bad, their attitude thereafter was strange. I had asked for a start date 1 month from accepting the position, but the were adamant on starting ASAP. I had cited family medical reasons which was reasonable. One of the cofounders started getting passively frustrated with me and wanted me to “meet in the middle” - which I did. His attitude was already poor before I even started. I accepted the start date but then retracted my application before I started due to another job opportunity. 3 months later they emailed me again and said they were impressed with my interview back then and asked if I was still interested. Lmfao.
