      Manager Interview

      Feb 8, 2020
      Anonymous employee
      Toronto, ON
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at ecobee (Toronto, ON) in Jan 2020

      Interview

The interview process started with a call from HR. A 45 minutes long chat about my past experience, why I want to work for Ecobee, salary expectations, etc. Then the next day, a phone call with the Director of the department. Some questions about my experience and expectations. In both cases, I had the opportunity to ask questions about the position and the company. There wasn't anything difficult or unexpected during the calls. It was more of a friendly chat, not an interrogation style. The next day I got confirmation that I will be moving to on-site interview. I got a Case Study, with various management-related problems to solve. They asked me to prepare a 30 minutes presentation with my proposed solutions. I had a week to prepare for it. The on-site interview consisted of two panels. First panel was with the department's Director and a Manager. The other was with two people who would be reporting to me. Company's VP also joined these panels for a while and asked and answered some questions. I walked them through my presentation, and then we had a discussion about my proposed solutions to the Case Study. Some more general questions followed. Lots of questions about my prior experience. Overall, quite pleasant experience (as far as job interviews go). The whole interview lasted about 3 hours. The only issue was that the panels were booked back-to-back and there were no breaks at all for a snack or bathroom. Throughout the process communication with HR was very good and quick. Decisions were communicated the same or next day. A nice touch at the end was that HR explained to me in details all the things that my interviewers liked and disliked about my interview. Very useful feedback, so even if you don't get the job, at least you have a list of things you can work on to improve during your future interviews.

      Interview

The interview process was long, but the real problem was expectation setting. They would tell me they would get back to me within a certain time frame and every time they overshot that time frame by a week. When waiting our interview room to free up all the employees sat on their phones instead of chatting and getting to know me.
