      Customer Solutions Engineer Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at dbt Labs in Jan 2026

      Interview

After completing two interviews and an online assessment that took me three days, I didn’t receive any update for a week. Eventually, I was informed that they decided to stop hiring in my home country and would instead transfer their hiring needs to another country. It felt like my time and effort were wasted, definitely not the best way to handle a hiring process. Organizations should avoid posting roles unless they are fully committed to hiring from the specific country. Otherwise, it risks wasting candidates’ time and effort.

      Application

I applied in-person. I interviewed at dbt Labs (Dublin, Dublin) in Nov 2025

      Interview

From submitting my application to receiving the offer the process took about 1.5 months. It consisted of several interview stages. First, I had an initial screening call with a Talent Partner, who was extremely friendly and supportive. The conversation focused on my background, experience, and availability, and it set a very positive tone for the entire process. Next, I had an interview with the hiring manager, who asked more detailed questions about dbt Labs to assess my understanding of the role and cultural fit, as well as questions about my professional background and experience. The interviewer was approachable and encouraging, which made the discussion very constructive. After that, I completed a technical assessment with three tasks. I spent around four days working on it and, in parallel, completed relevant foundational courses from dbt Academy to strengthen my understanding of the platform. I documented and explained each step of my work using a sandbox accounts. In the following interview with the manager, I walked through how I solved the technical assessment, highlighted areas where I initially felt uncertain, and explained alternative approaches to solving the same tasks. During this discussion, I also demonstrated my general troubleshooting approach. The final stage consisted of three interviews held on the same day, focusing on topics such as working under pressure, receiving and giving feedback, collaboration, and handling customer objections. All interviewers were supportive, professional, and friendly, which made the experience enjoyable rather than stressful. Overall, it was a great experience. I felt very excited throughout the process and gained a lot of positive emotions from the interactions with the team. The most challenging part was waiting for the final decision, but I remained patient and was ultimately delighted to receive the offer.

      Question 1

One of the questions was how I would handle a situation where a client requests a feature that is not available on their current plan and can only be accessed by upgrading their account.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at dbt Labs

      Interview

Poor communication, lower salary than promised, and eventually ghosted. The process began with an interview with the hiring manager, mostly behavioral questions and high level technical concepts. Three weeks later, I got a take home assignment which involved setting up dbt cloud and answering some questions based on that. The assignment wasn't overly difficult and I spent some time making sure it was well done. I was emailed by the original recruiter saying that the role had been passed off to someone else. I completed the assignment but the new HR person assigned to the role missed it and asked if I sent it. I re-sent the assignment and still haven't heard back 2 weeks later after much follow-up and asking for confirmation of receipt. Additionally, they said the original cap on the salary range was $160k, I was informed this was a mistake and it was actually $138k. I went to check the role online since I thought the posting would be removed and the listing now says $121k. It sucks to get ghosted and have the salary keep dropping after doing a take home assignment, but it's good to know how the company operates before getting too far. I had my sole interview on Christmas Eve (weird day to even offer that..) and have been getting strung along since. I would avoid this company if you value your time and having an organized interview process.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

What did you learn during the dbt cloud setup process and how could it be improved

      Question 2

what do you know about data transformations? why would someone use dbt?

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're really sorry to hear about your experience — it’s clear we fell short in several important ways, and this is not the kind of experience we want anyone to have when engaging with us. Your comments about the take-home assignment, the recruiter handoff, and shifting salary expectations are being discussed with the team so we can understand where the breakdowns occurred and how to prevent them going forward. We truly appreciate the time and effort you invested, and can understand how frustrating and disappointing this must have been. - Vic Mileham, VP of Talent Acquisition, dbt Labs
