I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Shopify (Seattle, WA) in Oct 2024
Interview
pair programming with interviewer to solve a problem with design first, and write a service and run and test with postman. Then ask questions about how to scale up the solution.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Shopify (Berlin) in Mar 2022
Interview
At the beginning of the meeting I made a couple of basic mistakes. I put the mic near the keyboard in which I was typing my notes so the other person could hear the keystrokes, and I was no directly looking at the camera because I had an external monitor. These were rookie mistakes I know.
But the interviewer got totally mad about this. She didn't ask for a change nicely. She was totally out of herself. She literally asked "are you even interested in this call?"
I reacted and fixed both, but the interviewer kept harassing me until the end of the meeting even tho I fixed it and apologized about it very quickly.
Bad predisposition overall, like if the interviewer was just meeting an obligation to interview me because I was a referral. At the end of the meeting I felt she was super violent with me.
The first thing she said was basically "you're not a good match because you don't have enough experience with this position and we look for experienced people". But this is nonsense because I was referred to this position.
Terrible awkward experience. I had a good first impression of the Company, but after this, not anymore.
* applied through smartrecruiters
* filled out detailed questionnaire related to my experience, providing examples of coding background and technical leadership at FAANG companies.
* was then asked to do a phone screen without ever talking to a reecruiter
* asked recruiter for salary and team details before wasting anyone's time on interviewing, they said it is "impossible to know the salary"
I am not going to waste my time on some problem that has 0 real world application without knowing what Shopify would approximately pay. this interview process is one of the strangest I have seen in the entire tech industry.
