      Cashier/Beauty Advisor Interview

      Nov 11, 2014

      Temecula, CA

      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Sephora (Temecula, CA) in Oct 2014

      Interview

Sorry this is going to be so long, but I'm going to go into as much detail as possible. I applied on a Sunday online, by the next day, Monday afternoon, I got a call for a group interview that Thursday. I know what you're all thinking, group interview?! Yes, a lot of places in the mall do it, because it really shows them who shines out. Before, the interview I was already familiar with the store and products, but I did a little research on store background. You don't always need to do this, however, I made it a habit, because you never know if they may ask you questions about it. I arrived about 5-10 min. early in professional attire, make up and hair done. I definitely say wear all black, because you want to look professional and the employees wear all black, so you want to dress like the position you want. I also decided to wear black flats instead of heels, they still look classy and you don't want to worry about tripping or falling and my black heels were a little too high. And honestly, the interview space is not very big, so it makes it easier to move around. I went up to a Beauty Advisor and let them know that I was there for an interview. A woman came over to me and took us through the back. The group interview was 4 people including myself, there was suppose to be more, but they never showed up. They asked basic questions to tell about yourself and why you want to work for Sephora. When you talk about yourself, this is your time to sell why they should hire you. Make it relate to the position. When you're in a group interview you want to be the first to answer and keep your answers short and to the point. I say max. 2 min. answer unless they ask more specifically to you. The ladies that interviewed me were extremely nice and made me feel very comfortable talking to them. But you still need to maintain a level of professionalism. They asked about work history. Words that we would use to describe ourselves. What kind of work environment we were looking for. At the end, they ask if you have any questions. Have a question! NEVER ask about employee discount, pay type or anything relating to money. For the interviewer, it doesn't look good. Some questions I would use: Why did you choose to work at Sephora? And what happens after this point? They'll answer and thank them, I shook both ladies hands. I never got asked about the broken bottle scenario. I got a call two days later for my 2nd group interview, so again, dressed professionally. Showed up a few min. early. It was suppose to be 7 people, but only 3 of us showed up. This time we met with a general manager, the other ladies were like "shift leads" or assistant manager. She was extremely friendly and asked: Tell me about yourself. Why Sephora? Do you know who the parent store is? (*This is where the researching or if you just know, comes in handy- by the way, it's Louis Vuitton*) and she just had more of regular conversation. She was a lot more personable and just likes to talk to get a feel of who you are. At the end, she liked all 3 of us and decided to have us do our 3rd interview on the spot. It was a mock cashier/customer type thing. One person pretends they're a cashier, one a customer and you act as if it were real. Everyone switches around, so no matter what, you play each part. When you're the cashier, keep eye contact, smile, ring up products, if you're familiar with one of the products they have or even if you don't, in the mock pretend you do and talk about what you like about it, ask if they have a beauty insider card and if they don't if they would like to have one. The one who interviews you will give you scenarios. At the end, the lady will tell you how she thinks you did, depending on size of the group. Also, throughout this whole process, check the online application page under "my tasks" and it will show you all of the places you applied to and the status. I heard sometimes after the 1st interview they forget to call, but will put it on website, so at least check it once every night. And to make sure to call references and let them know you just interviewed and keep a lookout-out for random #s. If they don't answer the call or call back if a voicemail is left, it may be harder for you to get the job. A few days later, I recieved a call to keep checking website. I checked the website and received an offer. Read the terms, they tell you your position and how much they are going to pay you. They also give an orientation date. You decide to accept offer or not. Good luck! I hope this helped!

      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Sephora (Los Angeles, CA) in Apr 2015

      Interview

It was a basic group interview. Very short. Maybe 10 minutes. The manager said she was interviewing hundreds of candidates for just a few positions (seems inefficient to me) so I assume it was just an overall impression she was looking for. There were about 8 or 9 of us and we all had to stand in the back room where we were interrupted a few times by other employees so it was not ideal, but group interviews never are. It was okay.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Why do you want to work here? Was there a time you saw a manager/co worker breaking rules and what did you do? What item of makeup could you not live without?
