Interview
The interview process consisted of 3 rounds:
1. Initial 30-minute phone screening with HR discussing background and expectations
2. Technical interview (1 hour) with team lead and senior developer:
- Technical questions
- Code review exercise
- Discussion about past projects
3. Final round with management (45 minutes):
- Culture fit discussion
- Salary negotiation
- Benefits overview
Total timeline was about 2 weeks from first contact to offer. Communication was prompt throughout, though promised terms in final offer differed from what was discussed during interviews.
I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at SIA Innovations (Montreal, QC) in Nov 2023
Interview
Unidirectional
Based on the job description & later the technical interview, the recruiter hyped up the regular “developer” role to be much more “AI” centric & prestigious than what role likely was was. They made sure to mention several times opportunity to work with a specific "big tech" future client of theirs. Felt like a bate & switch tactic.
My 2hr technical interview start was changed at the last hour. Only the non-technical recruiter was present to distribute question & babysit from using Chat GPT, calling a friend, or doing web searchers. Was a bit demeaning given that all interview questions were only classical coding style challenges rather than machine-learning design ones. As an experience professional, these were easy to get a working sub-optimal solution quickly with the time given, but quite involved & contrived to get a robust right answer. Even tho grading scheme was hidden, it appears either it was automatically marked by a robot or they were only accepting for specific optimal implementations.
Overall, seems like this employer is quite inflexible with unreasonably high expectations in terms of low salary, speedy execution, long work hours, etc. Interestingly, employer was looking for on-site willing candidates yet technical interview managed to be 100% remote. After my technical assessment I was told they would get back to me within a week, but I have not heard back till I followed up weeks later. All my interactions within the reciting process have been quite negative & make me question whats it like to truly work there?
