      Software Engineer Interview

      Feb 8, 2020
      Anonymous employee
      Nairobi
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Microsoft (Nairobi) in Oct 2019

      Interview

I was part of the 2019 university hiring and the process was pretty interesting. It all began with the 1st round which was made up of a codility test and a Skype interview which I passed🤗. The Skype was more of concept and design questions while the codility was to test your programming in which I coded 2 out of 3 problems very well. Round 2 was an on-site interview which involved mostly technical questions and white board coding and they were 4 in number each lasting 45 mins. The on-site interview was more like a discussion with the interviewer. One thing I did to make the interview process this way was that; given each question, I described it the way I saw it before the interviewer and tried explaining to him how i will solve it then tried to optimize my algorithm. Along my explanation, if I was going astray, he could easily bring me back on track either by asking me a question or literally telling me to think in some other direction using some type or data structure. Before the interview, I was really nervous, but as i engaged in this talk with the interviewer, the fear just disappeared as he could speak out to help me since he was listening to me and understanding what I was trying to do. I realized at the end that it doesn't pay you anything if you try to just jump into the coding and start writing code when given a question. You will end up getting stuck. You won't be given any credit if you finish the interview in 5mims. Spend time and interact with your interviewer on the question. Talk to him and listen to him talk. This will also show him that you will do well in a team. Solving the question alone can show him that you are a bad team player. So even if you know the code to that problem, first discuss it with him. Explain the algorithm to him in plain words. At the end, i realized that this interview thing is just easy. This was my first ever interview immediately out of college and I nailed it ☺️
