I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Microsoft (Redmond, WA) in Oct 2012
Interview
I gave my resume to one of their recruiters in an info session. A few days later, I received an email for the first screening phone interview (about 30-45 minutes). It was an easy one: behavioral questions, really high-level technical questions, background, etc. Nice per on from HR.
About a week after that I received another email from my university recruiter about the second round phone interview (3 hours). This time, I talked with three different people. Most of the questions were technical, although every one of them asked questions about my background and previous works. In this round, I had to write some code via an online service that Microsoft uses for phone interviews. All of the interviewers were very polite and nice. At the end of each part I was able to ask them what they liked/disliked about Microsoft and especially their jobs at Microsoft. We also talked a little bit about the culture at Microsoft.
Expect technical deep dives, coding challenges, and problem-solving scenarios. Questions will probe your knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and software design, assessing your ability to build robust systems. yes yus yes
