      Customer Assistant Interview

      Oct 13, 2015
      Anonymous employee
      Aberdeen, Scotland
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Marks & Spencer (Aberdeen, Scotland) in Oct 2015

      Interview

I completed two online tests after filling out basic information on M&S's job website. One on abstract behavioural assessment, the other on situational assessment (involving response to animated scenarios). Straight after submitting these tests, I received notice that I had passed the tests successfully and was asked to select a time for interview. Before attending my interview, I browsed this site for advice. If you're doing the same, good one! Have a read of questions asked at interview and regarding tips in the role play scenario. Here's my experience: I was taken up to employee quarters for my interview and brought to a small side-room. There, I was introduced to my role play exercise by an employee. Once he left the room, I had 5 minutes to learn product information from a short booklet. He returned, asking about a shirt he wanted to buy for his father. It was out of stock, no surprises there haha. I mentioned other shirts, emphasising those which needed cuff links and could go well with ties which were on deal... Take into account whether it's in stock/ delivery options/ gift wrapping, etc. That kind of thing. It's really nothing to be worried about. Be nice, smile, talk. Before my assessor (customer) left the room, he asked me to fill out a self- assessment form: what went well/ what didn't/ what would I do differently next time. Show that you are willing to improve and develop skills on an ongoing basis, as that's an important outlook encouraged in employees/ people generally. I had plenty of time to fill out that form, so I wandered the room a bit, looking at the paintings. I don't know if they had cameras, but it's always best to avoid staring at a phone screen when able! That reminds me: put your phone on airplane mode/ turn it off before entering the store. You don't want it to distract you. My first assessor briefly came in to retrieve my feedback form. I waited a bit longer. The second stage of my interview involved an informal and informative chat with a manager. I was told that I had passed my role play and was asked a number of questions. It began with the usual "Why M&S?", "What does the job entail?", "What (relevant) experience do you have (retail, position offering a customer service)?"... the expected questions. Then I was reminded of the four general principles of M&S, which I knew of from my prior reading of company material online. Before your interview, read (at least) the most recent Plan A 2020 document. For each of the principles (innovation, integrity, in-touch inspiration) which were explained first, I was asked to tell of a time when I had displayed use of them. I could mention examples derived from work-related, social, etc settings, so it wasn't difficult. I was asked a few more basic questions afterwards, then asked if I had any I would like to raise. This second stage was also very pleasant! Be sure to prepare for the sorts of questions you may expect to come up- read more reviews left on this site! The third stage involved a discussion with my first assessor. I had been successful at the second stage too, so I was asked about specific positions that would suit me, including a more detailed discussion concerning hours and days per week for employment as a customer assistant. I had to read and sign a contract and got my passport scanned. I felt great to have interviewed well, to have been offered the job straight away, and to have accepted it in one fell swoop! You'll see what I mean!

      Interview

Very chilled out interview with a few questions about simple stuff like what you would do in a confrontational event. Really nice interviewer, felt more like a chat than an interview.
