I worked at Marks & Spencer full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of social gatherings ! Made lots of friends

    Cons

They treat there staff like dirt ! I worked on ladies fashions for 13 years and then I found out I was pregnant with my first child and because I couldn't do a 7am start because of morning sickness they pup me on foods to work ! They left me standing on an express till for 37 hours a week most of my days were 8 hours long and I did have a 10 hour shift !!! I didn't even get a chair to sit down on ! Had to fight to get my extra breaks that I was entitled to ! The mangers have not got a clue in how the store is run ! One manager in the store I worked was a bully and if she didn't like you then she would make your life he'll! ! She picked on one girl so much she left !!

    Advice to Management

If you are reading this then don't expect the staff to do the job of 3 people !! Treat them with respect as there the ones who are running your store and no what can be done ! There the ones who no what customers want !

    Pros

    Fun team based atmosphere
Staff waste at end of the day was a great time

Unless you are lucky enough to apply for a permanent contract, you could be laid off at very little notice, depending on how their finances are looking that month.

I have been working at Marks & Spencer part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone was friendly and welcoming across the store and I was integrated very quickly into the team which was reassuring.

Management team are really good and experienced in the store.

I have been given responsibility very quickly, keys to store etc and I'm left unsupervised to get on with the job which I like very much. I have little chats here with managers to make sure I'm on track backstage and also if there is anything extra I can help with on the shop floor.

Pay is also good with 20% discount.

Overall very good place to work and would highly recommend.

    Cons

Not really a con more of a niggle. I would say there is sometimes a shortage of staff (but from what I've heard this is not the store's fault but the wider M&S strategy to reduce operating costs). They have a certain budget to meet every week and cannot overspend which is understandable. However sometimes it is really difficult/near impossible to complete all the task required as there is generally not enough time and I do not like to leave work for morning staff. However management know this and are very understanding of this issue.

They do work you really hard but its worth it. The way I see it is your getting paid well and you have good benefits like the 20% discount so therefore this is a trade off. If you don't want to work hard then I would suggest looking elsewhere for an employer.

    Advice to Management

I'm still quite new but maybe a bit more communication about the store to ops staff. A more in-depth handover from shift to shift and how well the store is performing in general would be interesting to find out and how we could help to improve that. I feel that ops is quite a separated unit from the store and inclusion into the wider store and its activities/goals would be valuable for ops employees and also help improve the overall store performance.
