This was a panel interview, I was allowed to bring a resume and references. I was asked a series of questions about experience. There was a required response format, though it wasn't discussed at the interview itself, just in the written instructions.

I was asked to describe a project I had completed that I was proud of.
They asked me about my experience, my math scores, my interests, my welding ability, my education, etc. They were honestly a very nice group of people. It was almost like having a conversation with new acquaintances.

I applied in-person. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at IBEW Local 134 (Chicago, IL) in Jan 2016
Interview
Took the placement exam to join the apprenticeship. Had to place 100 out of 800 people. If you pass you then go to school for three month contingent on passing a background/physical/drug screen.
