      Brand Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Glassdoor (Mill Valley, CA) in Sep 2019

      Interview

The interview process was very thorough, and every step of the journey was meaningful. There was an initial phone call with a member of their recruiting/acquisition team. This call was a basic rundown of the job listing, and a bit of a gut-check or preliminary interview before jumping on the phone with a manager from the Brand team. It was a pleasant conversation and lasted about 20-30 minutes, with basic questions about my experience and what I was looking for in a new position. There was an outline of what to expect moving forward, with the second step being an interview with a manager, and the third step being an on-site interview and that I would be requested to put together a presentation and perform a design exercise. At the end of the call I was told that the recruiter would pass along my information to the manager and that she would be in touch with next steps. I was informed of my second interview within 24 hours, and had it scheduled very promptly. This time the interview was with the Art Director of the Brand team, and lasted about 30 minutes. Again, the conversation was very amicable, comfortable, and relaxed. There were some questions about strengths and areas for improvement, challenges faced with client feedback, and other fairly straight-forward questions. There weren't a lot of deep thought provoking questions, which I appreciated, as I've been in interviews where some more esoteric questions were asked that take a tremendous effort to answer effectively. The call concluded with a walk-through of my portfolio, and a deep dive walk-through of a favorite project of my choosing. At the end of the call, I was again informed that they would be in touch with next steps as soon as possible. By the end of the day, I had heard back from the recruiter that they would like to invite me to an onsite interview and quick design exercise/presentation. The third interview was onsite, and took about 3-3.5 hours in total. In preparation for the interview I was asked to create a presentation explaining my design process from start to finish using a fictional project brief provided by the Glassdoor team. I would then have time to give a brief presentation on my portfolio. Once I was checked in at the front desk, a member of the recruitment team came downstairs and gave me a quick tour of the office and walked me to the conference room where I would be meeting with the various members of the team. The day was broken up into 5 or 6 different interviews, all in that same conference room, and allowed various members of the Glassdoor team to ask questions of me, and vice versa. Overall, I ended up chatting with 7-8 members of the team, which sounds like a lot, but everyone was incredibly nice and welcoming. Each conversation was easy-going, and helped me feel very comfortable throughout. At the end of the day, I met and walked out with the recruiter from my initial phone interview, and was informed that they'll be discussing the outcome of the interview and would let me know if there's anything else. This was on a Friday, and a job offer was extended by end of the day the following Monday. Overall, it was probably one of the best interview experiences I've ever had. It sounds like a lot when written out, but the team made it simple and straight-forward, and every step had a purpose.
