      Program Manager Interview

      Dec 6, 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Docusign (San Francisco, CA) in Nov 2018

      Interview

I applied online for the role and received an email from recruiter after a couple of weeks. Recruiter was nice and quickly scheduled a phone screen with the Hiring Manager. The interview went well and after 3 days I was invited for an onsite. It was all good till now. I had 5 rounds of interview at onsite with different members of the team. The very first interviewer seemed not much interested in my answers and often interrupted me. If that was not enough, she kept going in circles about one of the projects I worked on and it felt like she just wanted to prove that I do not have the experience or background needed for the role. I tried giving other examples of my work but she wouldn't budge. Interestingly, she did not give any introduction of herself so I did not even who I was interviewing with. I asked this towards the end and she gave a very brief answer adding she joined only few weeks ago so does not know much. Then came in another interviewer - full of himself, arrogant from the very beginning and again not interested in my responses at all. I was asked how I can do a job X and when I started talking about it he cut me off by saying "even my daughter can do that". Note that he did not give me a proper example of the question/situation he asked me to answer even when I requested twice. Next time he interrupted and said "Please stop, I am only interested in having meaningful conversations". He had some personal issue that day and he was taking out all the frustration on me. So unprofessional!!!! He did not care to ask if I had any questions for him, instead he kept bragging about himself as if it was his interview and he had to sell himself. If you are so great, you should be humble and let others see the good in you. You don't need to tell people how smart you are. He was one of the Senior Directors and I was shocked to see such behavior from someone so senior or maybe that was the reason of the arrogance. Towards the end he just left in a jiffy. After that there were 3 more interviewers - all decent, nobody was demeaning. Not sure what feedback they gave but at least they did not insult me. I was asked some more questions and the interview ended at the scheduled time. 2 days later when I followed up, I was told that I was not selected (Kind of expected, isn't it?) but they did provide some feedback which I appreciate. Some of the feedback points are just stupid like less experience (did you not know how many years of experience I have before calling me onsite?) or lack of experience in the product development domain. (Well if that's the case, this is the first thing you should have asked me in screening) I do feel bad for not getting selected as the company's product is good, has potential and could have been the platform I am looking for but on a second thought maybe I wouldn't have been able to work with people who are so disrespectful of others. You represent your organization and yourself to outside world in these interviews. It's a small world and this is an experience I will carry with me forever.....

      Interview

It was a first screening call with HR. HR scheduled call for 15 mins which lasted for 20 mins. It wasn't a zoom call so I couldn't understand whether I did good or bad.

      Interview

      1. **Initial Screen & Behavioral Fit:** A brief call with a recruiter or HR to review the resume, gauge interest, and assess cultural fit and basic communication skills. This step often uses **behavioral questions** to understand the candidate's professional style. 2. **Technical Assessment (Screening):** This is a preliminary evaluation of core job skills, often through an online **coding challenge**, a short **take-home assignment**, or a focused technical screening call. Its goal is to filter for minimum competency. 3. **Hiring Manager Interview (Mixed):** This deeper discussion with the direct manager blends both question types. You'll face more **in-depth behavioral questions** (e.g., using the STAR method) about past projects, teamwork, and leadership, alongside **mid-level technical questions** about system design or domain knowledge. 4. **Deep Dive & Peer Review (Technical/Practical):** This stage involves team members or subject matter experts. It is highly **technical**, often including a **live coding session**, a **system design whiteboarding exercise**, or a deep analysis of a complex technical problem relevant to the role. This evaluates practical, on-the-job execution. 5. **Director/Final Review (Behavioral/Strategic):** The last step focuses on strategic alignment, vision, and long-term potential. An executive or department head asks high-level **behavioral and situational questions** about how the candidate handles ambiguity, makes difficult decisions, and contributes to the company's overall strategy and culture.
