      User Experience Designer Interview

      Application

The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Canva (Melbourne) in Jun 2023

      Interview

I wasn't into the interview stage, but Canva noticed me a lot about why they refused me. As a large scale company, they being fair for every applicator, if in the future, there's another chance I can apply for them, I still try it.

      User Experience Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Canva (Sydney) in Dec 2017

      Interview

Overall, I was a bit underwhelmed by the interview process. For a company centred on design thinking, I was expecting a little more creative and strategic engagement from the employees involved in screening the take-home assessment responses and conducting the face-to-face interviews. Even though Canva specified a number of times that they are looking to bring more specialised UX Designer positions into their team, I get the feeling that they're still struggling to define exactly what they would expect from a UX Designer. The terms 'UX Designer' and 'Product Designer' were sometimes used interchangeably, and by the end of the process, the role of the UX Designer was positioned in a way that was a bit vague; anything from a product strategist to a UI (visual) designer. The take-home activities were definitely more focused on UI execution than UX or product research and strategy. The UX research methodologies that I was exposed to during the interview process felt somewhat limited, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of exploratory research or idea validation conducted upfront (mostly just online testing of UI prior to dev). When feedback was provided on the take-home assessment submissions, words included "right" and "wrong" execution, which also gives me the impression that they already had a solution in mind and are looking more for designers to implement known tasks, while most of the product strategy and research/creative ideation is the responsibility of another role. It would be amazing both for the business itself and for candidates if Canva were able to better define the ways that they see the UX Designer role being a specialist role in the future. Also, having a Canva design team member directly involved in the interview process would be a major plus. It was a great opportunity to be involved, and I'd love to see Canva expand out the capabilities of their design team in the future.

      Question 1

One of the take-home assignments that was based on designing a real Canva product called out that Canva wouldn't be 'assessing user research'. This was surprising to see in a UX Designer test.
