      Sr User Researcher Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at BusPatrol

      Interview

I had a one hour screener video call with a recruiter. Before starting I opened up the job posting and it was gone, so I couldn't refresh my memory about the role. When I mentioned this, the recruiter shared that it should have been sent to me (but it wasn't). We then had a nice discussion. In the end he told me he was going on vacation and that the process may move slowly which I was gone with. He also told me that he doesn't send updates when there is nothing to update me on, so no news can still be good news. This was a red flag for me because the best recruiters I've worked with value communication and have emotional intelligence around the candidate experience. Within a day I hear back that they wanted me to move forward and schedule my next interview for the next day. When I started the interview with a product person and their existing UXR person I immediately got weird vibes. It started out by sharing things about them personally since we're humans and have more to ourselves than work. At first I viewed this as kind of nice. Of course I want to work somewhere that values me as a whole person but I feel like it may have been a tricky way for me to share personal information about myself that's illegal to ask. They both started talking about their marital status and their kids which then had me sharing about my husband and kid, plus more info. This taught me a valuable lesson to only share tidbits about myself as it relates to the role. Then the rest of the interview felt like good cop, bad cop. As others have commented I get the impression their work life balance is not good since the UXR made a point to convey that the work has to get done based on others availability. After the interview ended, I shared with my friends that I would not move forward if presented the opportunity because the vibe was off and I didn't want to be a part of the team. The next day, I received a very generic email saying they are not moving forward.
