      User Researcher Interview

      Jan 10, 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Amsterdam
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Booking.com (Amsterdam) in Jan 2016

      Interview

The three-step interview process: phone screening – phone interview with two user researchers – two rounds of on-site interview with two senior user researchers and two product owners. First of all, I was very satisfied with the entire hiring process. It was very professional, smooth and fast. After reading all these negative reviews on glassdoor I was prepared to the worst, but cannot complain at all. The UX research team has an exceptionally great recruiter, so do not hesitate to apply, you won't be disappointed. I was very pleased with both phone and on-site interviews as well. The screening interview is all about your motivation and previous experience. The phone interview is about your expertise in user research methods, A/B testing, and the most important – business-relevant metrics to measure success. For the first on-site interview you have to prepare a case study presentation on a given research question, suggestions for A/B or MVT, and insights from your own review as a customer. The second on-site interview is all about user research and agile product development, and it is the most important part. The reason I didn’t get an offer was “no work experience in agile product development”, and it was fair enough. They are looking for a person who can immediately start working independently. No mentoring provided. You should be able to prioritize on-a-fly multiple research demands from multiple stakeholders (product owners), constantly deliver a set of prioritized features and functionalities, and A/B testing plan to measure success. It means you must have a strong background in UX research for in-house agile development within e-commerce. If you possess all mentioned above capabilities I would strongly recommend you to apply. If not, do not waste your time. Some tips for interview. First, when it comes to usability testing, do not think in terms of reliability and validity, think how fast you can deliver the results. As I understood, they usually conduct a guerrilla testing (mostly with team members), not a full-fledged evaluation. Time is what matters. Second, think in that way about each method you would recommend. Finally, do not suggest any improvement which is not a case for A/B testing, it confuses product owners. They do not think in terms of overall customer experience, retention and loyalty, they think in order conversion rates. In essence, the interview isn’t difficult, no tricky questions, if you are agile enough. Keep it in mind and good luck.

      Question 1

How would you prioritize five features (functionalities) for product development team If features are equally important for customers and business goals, and no matter how long it will take, how much it will cost and what resources you will need to build it?

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Booking.com (Amsterdam) in May 2025

      Interview

The recruiter interview was very fast. She was direct, to the point, and did not smile once during the interview. The second interview with the hiring manager and role director was in depth and asked mostly behavioral questions relating to my previous experince.

      Question 1

Tell me a project where your research had direct impact on the outcomes for the stakeholders. They asked this twice, so prepare two stories.

      Interview

The usual process, calls with hiring manager, task, team leads, and team fit. Most of it handled via email, all process remote, smooth although not the fastest one. Overall, all good.

      User Researcher Interview

      Apr 4, 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Booking.com (London, England) in Aug 2021

      Interview

The hiring process cosisted of 5 interviews including a round with a case stuty and presentation of own project (3rd round - 2 hours). The initial communication with the recruiter was very good. The experience with the pa el was the worst I ever had. The two male managers in the panel had a very negative approach. I was really surprised. Afterwards, I found out that a colleague of mine had the same experience with the same guys 2 years before. It is really unacceptable considering the time that we are requested to invest. In the end, I didn t even receive feedback and I had to email the recruiter and the hiring manager 4 times to receive a generic rejection email.
