      Software Engineer Interview

      Sep 6, 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Edmonton, AB
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Bits In Glass (Edmonton, AB) in Jul 2013

      Interview

I received a phone call and after a brief conversation, we arranged a meeting to discuss my resume. In this initial interview with HR manager and a Technical Dev Lead, we discussed my resume, skills, and past experience. This was supposed to be the technical interview, however, all the questions were behavioural and situation-based. The interviewers pressed really hard for questions such as salary expectations (this was also pressed for in the phone interview) and would not move forward unless a hard figure was given. I tried to defer salary negotiations as I do not like to talk salary until I've been able to understand the position's responsibilities and how well my skills and knowledge stack against it. I agreed to a follow-up technical skills test the following week. On the day of the technical test, I was placed in shared office with a workstation. A fresh Win2K8 VM was set up for me and the problem was described to me. There was a little direction for solution and no expectation of completion. I begin to set up my IDE and SQL databases, etc. With two hours, I spent over 1 hour setting up my working environment before I could start working on the problem. At the end, the proctor was grading me on the direction I was beginning to take and what I was planning to do. The entire technical exam felt very disorganized and the problem was very open, leading to very little display of my knowledge and skill set. I received a follow-up phone call a week later to inform me that they were not going to move on.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The interviewer would not continue interview until a hard salary nlumber was given. At that point, we had only discuss the role and responsibilities, we had not talked about my own experiences and my knowledge.
