What is the hiring process like at Indeed?

Great work/life balance; mediocre career development and declining culture

      Senior product scientist
      Former employee
      Seattle, WA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

      * Work/life balance is fantastic. I've never had a PTO request denied. * Coworkers are genuinely nice people. * PMs are very good. They're technical and can write basic queries and understand the basics of experimentation and machine learning. They are also incredibly knowledgable about the product they own.

      Cons

      * "Not built here syndrome" means that you will often use rickety internal tools to perform standard tasks instead of external tools * The performance evaluation process changes practically every quarter in the middle of the quarter without notice, often to weaponize it against employees * Reorgs just about every six months, requiring teams to totally change their priorities * Career development opportunities are overstated. You will get - at most - minimal experience with what you want to learn unless you totally transition to a new job title. * No room for high risk/high reward projects. * Teams are very territorial. It's not unusual to work on a major initiative for six months, then have another team claim ownership over it and not get to finish the project to completion. * Indeed's culture treats Product Scientists as less important than Data Scientists. Data Scientists often do Product Science-related tasks, whereas the reverse is rarely true. Product Scientists are generally assumed to be poor programmers and are not given the opportunity to write production code even when asked.

      Pay is Ok

      Account executive
      Former employee

      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Indeed maintains a bloated in body count and are over-zealous with their approach. They definitely hire and have way more in sales than what is actually needed so this is great if you are looking for a simple AE role and new in the sales industry.

      Cons

Way underpaid for those that do work hard to hit their numbers and are not open to helping their sales org running more efficiently.

      1

Great for awhile, seems to be on the decline.

      Ux designer
      Former employee
      Seattle, WA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Decent pay, killer benefits, lots of flexibility, unlimited amount of cool hiring problems to solve.

      Cons

Company just seemed to not be able to focus on fixing the core experience for customers, ran many experiments on things customers weren't interested in. Product teams remain siloed despite many attempts to fix that.

      Devastating for my Career

      Product management
      Former employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Some teams have good work/life balance.

      Cons

I worked at Indeed for 7 years across various different departments and functions. When I think about my time at Indeed, I feel devastated. It's difficult to explain how much these 7 years damaged my career, my health and my personal relationships. I started off like any excited, confident new hire and drank the cool aid. I never would have imagined the life turns that would keep me stuck in a toxic environment, or the decline it would take on my self esteem, and how hard it would be to break the cycle, and reclaim my career, my health and rebuild my relationships. Over my 7 years, there were several incredibly toxic male managers, and a host of males in the chain of command above them who supported them. There is a Vice news article on harassment at Indeed and the culture during my time there, for external reference. Sometimes things were OK for a short while, but what was consistent about Indeed was cowardice. Leadership was too cowardly to deal with toxic managers who were allowed to run amok. They were too cowardly to take action towards actual innovation. They were too cowardly to make clear decisions. All this resulted in political infighting, stagnation, and a culture where the worst were allowed to rise while hardworking and well intended employees were demoralized and not able to work to their potential. Projects were continually cancelled after having been approved and worked on for many months or even years and never launched, leaving me with only a fraction of what I was capable of accomplishing or what my peers were doing in other companies. These were projects which had even been labeled as top strategic priorities for the company, and even for Indeed's parent company, Recruit. These were not small projects, but career defining projects. Across all the different teams and departments I worked on, I just kept hoping for Indeed to become the company it says it is. Indeed preached a lot about equality, and I wanted to believe in those values, but in the end, it was only gaslighting. I worked with smart people and I kept thinking that after a new leader was hired or after a reorg or a new opportunity, things would get better. I did try to leave multiple times, but health insurance and difficult family situations kept me feeling stuck. Knowing what I know now, I should have pushed through and left anyway. I always received strong performance reviews until the very last cycle. I had reached out to HR because a male in my chain of command who was known to be toxic- my immediate boss had also reported him - was harassing me. I asked to be transferred literally anywhere else in the company. I had been there for 7 years at that point. Although the manager had a years long record of complaints and had already been demoted, instead of taking action against him, HR refused my transfer and began making a case against me. This manager had been allowed to stay because the GM of the division protected him. This manager hunted me, slandered me, and did all manner of toxic things. My female boss also ended up resigning because of him - she also couldn't handle the harassment. Not surprisingly, I was laid off in the next round of layoffs. After 7 years. The harassment had become so bad and the projects so stalled out I was kind of relieved. Now, I've reclaimed my health, and I'm working for a company where I am thrilled to ship something new nearly every single sprint. So while I'm on an upward trajectory, I should be several levels high than I am, and the money I have lost in terms of delayed career advancement, especially as a result of never being able to complete projects, is staggering. I kept hoping I could complete one big project to have something good to look back on for my time there. It never happened. Indeed just had more reorgs changing projects and a perpetual cycle of wasted time. My lesson learned is that I will never again allow my time to be wasted the way Indeed wasted it or let myself be treated the way I was treated at Indeed.

      Pros

Great company before 2023 lay offs

      Product manager
      Current employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

      - work life balance is unbeatable - work can be fun and rewording - i've had 3 different managers and have had a positive experience with all of them - no micromanaging - free coffee and food at the office even for remote employees - WFH internet reimbursement - tons of free swag

      Cons

leadership handled the lay offs horribly and they have been very tone deaf after it happened. Apart from the people that were laid off, an entire department received demotions for no reason, they just couldn't afford to have those people in that salary band any longer. I personally received a demotion even though all of my reviews have been meets and exceeds and I was on track for a promotion the following month. My demotion actually displaced me from product to operations and when I asked HR what my path back to PM would be (since this is what i was hired for, i was doing very well at it, and i also did not want to do operations) they told me i'd have to wait for another PM position to open and apply and interview like everyone else. This was very disheartening and demotivating because I went through 5 rounds of PM interviews to get hired initially.

      Some amazing people, but....

      Learning architect
      Former employee

      Business outlook

      Pros

I met and worked with some amazing people there who genuinely care about what they do and advancing the mission of helping people find jobs.

      Cons

      - DEI is a cult here. You have to subscribe to it, or you'll very quickly feel isolated. Real diversity includes diversity of thought, which isn't welcomed. I was told by leadership I couldn't share my views, even when delivered in a professional manner. - Layoffs. There has been a layoff each year for the past three years, but there's somehow money for the restaurants and coffee bars, or to help relocate employees from conservative states. I think most people would rather keep their jobs. - Clarity about jobs. I was recruited for one position, then told it changed during the interview process, and again after I was hired; I was told the position no longer existed, and it was renamed. Turns out they were still hiring people with that title, and paying them more. I had to fight to get the role I was recruited for, and was told it was a promotion.

Good place to work compared to other tech spaces.

      Software developer
      Former employee

      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

      - Tried to train their employees and promote from within the company. - Good benefits (then again I’m a single person & decently healthy) - Internal mobility is pretty easy if you have your supervisor’s support

      Cons

      - At the end of the day, the decisions are profit driven vs people driven and often times those are at odds. - Senior leadership has been a bit unhinged the past few years. They hired like crazy and then they let people go like crazy after hiring the Kellogs HR lady as Indeed’s head or HR (she was known for union busting during her time at Kellogs). But she’s gone now, so who knows what’s next. It seems like leadership is still trying to figure that out. The last 3-4 years at Indeed have been full of org changes and shuffling people around. Who knows when they’ll get it right.

It was a great company to work for.

      Client success specialist
      Former employee

      Business outlook

      Pros

Great culture, amazing coworkers, great benefits, open PTO, took care of us during the pandemic.

      Cons

Senior leadership rolls out large product changes that affect the client drastically and then a few months later will just scrap the whole thing. Often times these changes greatly disrupt Employer hiring processes and strategies which causes a lot of confusion, frustration, and churn. Our goals would also often take a total 180 turn each quarter which could make it hard to find your groove. You have to be very very adaptable. I also have to mention we were laid off (in a second round of layoffs within a year) and our office was shut down with (of course) 0 warning.
