What is health insurance like at AECOM?

Pros

Depending on the office you’re in and how you tend to work.. 1. Straight Time for approved overtime - as long as you’re on one of the bigger projects you will always get paid for all your time which is very rare in the salary world. 2. Opportunity to earn lots of extra money - when I did field work I basically earned double my salary between straight overtime hours plus per diem from the project. 3. If you work diligently and are on the managers good side you will be in a very sweet spot. They reward the employees they like and not get mad about things they will rail someone else for. 4. If you are on one of the big federal projects you will not have issues with billability.

Cons

1. Fieldwork can burn you out, I was spending about 50% of my time in the field. 2. Benefits are average, PTO could be better especially considering fieldwork requirements. However it’s nice that you get a health insurance discount if you are somewhat healthy and can pass the wellness checklist. 3. Managers have favorites and can be pretty conspicuous about it. 4. People get stuck in a role, even good people. Can be hard to see path for advancement.

Advice to Management

Let good employees know you think they are food. I didn’t even realize how much my managers liked me until I put in my two weeks. They really treated me well but I could never tell if they had expectations that id move up in my career. Also make sure you don’t burn out the people who are good at fieldwork, just because they are good at it.

Does AECOM give time off to volunteer?

Pros

Peers are intelligent, fun. Upper management is completely out of touch with reality.

Cons

Executives think it's reasonable to ask employees to work more than 50 hour weeks, while putting in additional time outside of work to develop company brand. All work should be billable, and volunteering is done in our own time and dime - under the AECOM brand, of course. Compensation is below average.

Advice to Management

Do not go into an office to tell employees that despite billing 40 hours but working 50 hours, we should all be encouraged to use our own time outside of work to build the company brand and engage in social media. AECOM has no interest in helping employees grow.

What is the retirement plan like at AECOM?

Pros

By being such a large firm, a typical AECOM office provides all kinds of crossover and collaboration with engineers, planners, architects, and designers. AECOM’s “Buildings + Places” business line is an amalgamation of Civil, Structural, Electrical, Mechanical, Fire Protection, Plumbing, Architects, and Interior Designers. At the end of the day your experience is dictated by your supervisor, and there are definitely some PM’s who make for less than ideal teachers and mentors to younger staff. But, with that being said, at its best this unit is cohesive and can basically turn a client’s idea into reality all under one roof, which if you ask me is pretty badass.

Cons

401k match is nothing to write home about, some of the upper level discipline managers are more focused on business development than elevating team culture and individual member growth, there are levels of bureaucracy that come along with being a large corporation, and publicly traded stock means the executives are sometimes more driven to appease shareholders than employees

Advice to Management

Listen to recommendations from lower level engineers and designers, place higher emphasis on graduate development and career pathway planning in order to retain employees for longer periods of time, adjust benefits to increase during years with the company in order to encourage retention
