"The more we can create an environment where people can be themselves, the greater engagement we’ll see. I think giving people an opportunity to talk and share and realise they're not alone and that there are other people with shared experiences, helps to bring down some of those walls." During Black History Month Walgreens Boots Alliance colleagues have been examining racial equity issues and Fauzia Somani, Boots UK Future of Pharmacy Director, and executive sponsor for our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) business resource group, shares how her experiences in the United States, UK and Canada have shaped her work at WBA in the interview below:

  • We're trialling a brand-new recycling scheme in our stores! Since signing the UK Plastic Pact in 2018, we’ve been championing reducing plastic waste in all areas of our business, so we’re delighted to be launching a take back scheme in partnership with No7, allowing customers to recycle beauty, health and wellness products in our stores. Customers will be able to scan their empty products using a mobile phone, adding them to their online ‘bank’, before heading to a participating Boots store to deposit at a recycle point. For every five products deposited, customers receive £5 worth of Boots Advantage Card Points. The deposited empties are then sent directly to our recycling partner ReWorked, where they will be formed into new products. The new scheme will be available in 50 Boots stores across the country from Thursday 24 September. Find out more here:

Over the last few months we’ve been working hard to provide a safe, pleasant and open office environment, in order to welcome some of our colleagues back to our Support Office in Nottingham. The safety of our colleagues is our top priority so we have implemented a range of safety measures and guidance to accommodate enhanced hygiene and social distancing, including; rearranging desk spaces, installation of santizing stations, changes to meeting room capacity and increased cleaning throughout the building. Thank you to all of the teams involved in making our offices safe and to our colleagues for their continued support during these challenging times.

Our amazing current and former colleagues support the Fund through donations and fundraising activities throughout the year, including our annual Benny Week event. • Recently we opened our new store at Bicester Shopping Park. Fiona Holland-Berry, Store Manager, said: ?Bicester has always been a popular shopping destination for people across the country, so we are very excited to welcome customers into our new Bicester Shopping Park store, which offers a great selection of beauty, health and wellness products and services. The new store has created 15 new and permanent jobs, so not only are we looking after the health and wellbeing of the local community, but we are also having a positive impact on the local economy. • For over 170 years we have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to operating as a responsible business. We will always champion diversity, and we will always take a zero-tolerance approach to racism and prejudice. Now more than ever, it is our responsibility to hold true to this commitment. We must stand up, take action, and demand change when we see injustice. There is always room to do better - and we will. We have listened to our Black, Asian and minority ethnic colleagues and customers. As a force for good, we are using these insights to develop an action plan that will help us enforce permanent changes within our organisation. We are holding ourselves and each other accountable for change, and these three commitments are just the beginning. Find out more:

  • On Tuesday, 28 July, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall visited Boots on Piccadilly Circus to hear about the Safe Spaces initiative, and our support of the charity Hestia and its UK SAYS NO MORE campaign. With one in four women and one in six men experiencing domestic abuse in the UK, and that number estimated to have been much higher during lockdown, we have been using our pharmacy consultation rooms in 2,400 stores across the UK as ?Safe Spaces? where victims can contact specialist domestic abuse services for support and advice. You can read more about the visit and our support of Hestia and the Sexual Assault Referral Centre Wash Bags Initiative here:

  • For Pride Month this June, our WBA Pride Alliance group created lots of great content to share with our colleagues to celebrate progress and raise awareness of issues facing the LGBT+ community. The group held virtual Global Coming Out Panels where LGBT+ colleagues and allies from across Walgreens Boots Alliance were invited to talk about their experiences of coming out in both their personal and working lives. You can see highlights from the Coming Out Panel here:
