Pros

There are some great people working there. But that doesn't make up for how the company will lay you off with no notice, and then attempt to rob you out of anything other than the minimum statutory severance package.

Cons

They will lay you off with no notice, regardless of the number of years employed, overtime put in, or stellar job reviews. Then they will try to cheat you out of anything other than the most basic statutory severance package. Whoever you are reading this, you deserve better.

Pros

* DTC is a great space to work in tech * Wine industry is unique and high-touch, which translates to great perks and lifestyle for those working with it * They hire good people * Lots of work to do! * You can steer your career or projects to a point if you’re willing to take the initiative * Profitable

Cons

* The software team and the operational team in California are slightly different businesses and don’t work together well enough (it’s like 90s Microsoft and 2000s Apple trying to work together, same industry vastly different approach and goals) * The leadership in US is competitive amongst themselves to the point of combative at times which gets in the way of getting things done * Lots of turnover, losing good people * Oooold legacy software * Losing to competition - who are also hiring away their team members * They never move fast enough (though there was some momentum within the product team when I left) * Needs a reckoning on the DEI front, “boys will be boys” attitude is tolerated too much (and their head of HR kept turning over - not a good sign)

Toxic culture and lack of leadership. Avoid!

Pros

Serving the wine industry is exciting (it's wine!) and the industry's need to modernize how wineries sell directly to consumers means there are a lot of opportunities to have an impact!

Cons

But not at WineDirect, unfortunately. The culture is toxic, where there are were known "troublemakers" whose unprofessional attitudes in the office are ignored because they are perceived to be "good with clients", when in actuality they are ensuring their own job security by throwing everyone else under the bus behind their backs. And there is a disturbing "boys will be boys" attitude at the executive level where some meetings are cringeworthy and the number of female employees in general is very low. The HR team is junior and does not get any guidance from the CFO (HR does not have a seat at the table), so they are put in untenable positions and turn-over in that team and many teams, is very high. There is a staggering amount of technical debt (this code is written in ColdFusion) which the executive team say they want to address, but it gets sidelined as the executive team escalate every request from customers because there is no Customer Success team to help guide customers on how to get the most out of the system and the leadership believe in reactionary responses, not strategic roadmaps. The executive team does not believe in sharing information and attempts at updates between teams are actively stifled by the executive team. There have been multiple examples where there was a marketing announcement about a new direction or deadline for a feature, which employees had to learn about from the website, and then figure out what they are supposed to be doing.
