Pros

I have been employed first by PMR (Executive Assistant to Marian Frattarola-Saulino) and then Values into Action (Administrative Coordinator, currently Learning and Development Specialist) since May of 2013. I came to this organization with over 25 years training experience. In my many years of work experience, almost entirely training-focused, I have rarely encountered a more dedicated group of colleagues – at all levels. The overwhelming majority of Values into Action community members (we see ourselves as a community) are dedicated, supportive, hardworking, creative, social-justice minded, and kind. Values into Action practices Participatory Management which, simply put, means every single community member is encouraged to contribute ideas to lift and improve the organization – it’s not just talk. Everyone is valued and all ideas are given consideration. This management style is a direct result of the VALUES of our Executive Director, Marian. She leads by example and sets a tone I’ve not seen matched anywhere. Over the years I’ve known some amazing leaders and advocates, and this organization is filled with them. From the people who accept our support and live their lives on their terms, to the Community Support Workers who help make that happen, to the leadership at all levels, Values into Action is miles ahead in terms of quality supports and true advocacy. The name says it all; we put our VALUES into ACTION, every day. People first. I would absolutely recommend Values to anyone who is seeking support services focused on their individual aspirations or anyone looking for employment. No, the work isn’t always easy, what worth doing is, but you will be surrounded, supported, and lifted by a caring community along the way. Maybe this kind of environment isn’t for everyone but it sure works for me.

Pros

The mission of this company is inovative. They want to support individuals with disabilities to live in their own home.

Cons

If you are a salaried employee they will wear you out. They do not hire enough people and use their mangement to fill the direct support hours. For them this is a bonus because they can bill for the hours and not pay out to the employee. Pure profit. Marion has the "bad girl" mentality of a high school student. If you are not in the click you are out.

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective from your time employed with the company. You'll be happy to know that our middle management positions are hourly and have been for the last two years. With that change, we greatly reduced team sizes and incorporated direct support into the supervisory role, keeping in line with our commitment to truly individualized support services and a work/life balance for our employees. A point of clarification- Values Into Action is a 501c non-profit organization and therefore does not retain profit, so any earnings over expenses are re-invested into the organization and our workforce. As for your comment regarding the CEO, we'd like to leave you with this: "For good ideas and true innovation, you need human interaction, conflict, argument, debate." -Margaret Heffernan After all, "Well behaved women rarely make history." Pros

After 5 years and two positions with this organization, I am as convinced today as the day I accepted employment that Values into Action strives every single day to put PEOPLE FIRST whether that be the individuals who choose to accept support, the Community Support Workers (CSWs) and Team Coordinators who actually provide the direct support, or any of the management and leadership who in so many ways support those whose role it is to provide the direct support. The culture is built on respect for diversity and openness AS WELL AS the overarching principle of inclusion and acceptance of disability or different abilities, all diversity, as a natural part of human life. In both my roles I have had the pleasure of interacting and working with amazing and dedicated people from all backgrounds and I am without doubt better for it and I have never worked with a better team.

Cons

If I must list a “con” it is that Values into Action’s mission and services are so cutting edge, so person-driven that it’s taking a while for everyone else (system) to catch up and that lag means that the work we and the CSWs do is undervalued by the system still trying to quantify that value and ensure that everyone who needs and wants services has access to the appropriate services of his or her choice. I guess I’d also add that smaller, cutting edge organizations like ours must always be open to change – ongoing change and reinvention. For some that may be difficult but, if you’re flexible and driven by social change, this agency may be a very good fit.
