Pros

Submittable has some of the kindest hardworking people I have ever met. Outside of upper management, people genuinely care about the company and each other.

Cons

In short, what was once a unicorn of a company in an awesome Montana town is now an absolute nightmare. A year ago I would have recommended a job at Submittable to anyone. Now, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy even with a referral bonus. There was a shift in leadership in the fall of 2020 following major layoffs during spring/summer. The communication from new leadership started off rocky and has gone downhill from there. The values are different, and it shows. Communication is now infrequent, reactive, and ambiguous at best. More often than not, it is just plain dishonest. New leadership immediately let go of several women and minorities and restructured the C-Suite with the straight white male good ol boy network. It was made clear that these new executives were friends of the new CEO. While the leaders are highly qualified and I'm sure add value, this is a drastic departure from the core values of diversity equity and inclusion that the company was founded on, and it goes against the values of many long time employees. There wasn't even an effort to hire an equitable C-Suite, and it was made clear that it was not a priority. The company is now focusing on marketing towards corporate social responsibility, which leaves employees wondering how ethical it is to profit off of a cause that the company takes little to no part in. There have been consistent and steady firings of long time, hard working, and well liked employees. Founders and original long time employees have "left" without explanation. The firings have been without any warning or notice, and have left the entire workforce confused, scared, and wondering who is next. What once was a company where employees felt safe asking questions and leading positive change is now a place where people work in fear. Meetings that used to be collaborative are now silent. There is an "If you speak up, you pay" atmosphere, and it has become extremely toxic. Now what everyone wants to hear about - pay. It is bad. There is a constant struggle to make bare minimum below market wages, and employees are underhandedly punished for asking for more. That is not my single experience, but a the shared experience of MANY. There is no transparency or willingness to catch up with the times. Missoula used to be a cheap place to live. It isn't anymore. Wages at Submittable are not competitive, and do not allow most of the employees to live comfortably. Two or three years ago, this might have been OK as Submittable had so many great benefits and was an amazing and friendly place to work. Unfortunately, this is not the case anymore. It's just not worth it, particularly with companies offering remote positions in different parts of the country at much higher pay. If you are OK with substandard wages at a company where you need to be quiet, keep your head down, and work 60+ hours a week with very little support, then this might be the place for you. For everyone else, stay away. This place isn't what it used to be and there are much better options. I hope I am wrong and it makes me sad, but I don't see the company lasting more than a year.

Pros

Free snacks and excellent onboarding

Cons

Not a welcoming company to work at if you are a Woman or person of color. Raising issues about inequity to HR results in them threatening you with a “performance improvement plan.” The “plan” consists of forcing employees to double productivity to meet unrealistic quotas due to management’s failure to do their part, but also as a means to overwhelm the employee by assigning unrealistic workloads so that they have a reason to fire the employee, or so that they can eventually quit due to exhaustion and overwhelm. The product they market and sell is a Social impact software, marketed to improve DEI/ Employee engagement yet they fail to have DEI support within the company. They actively choose to dismiss and diminish complaints about racism and discrimination- they fail to take accountability for underpaying and overworking those who are minorities and constantly fail to acknowledge their contributions to the team

Pros

The job postings and offer letters depict optically that there are a lot of pros and perks to working here. Things like “stocked kitchen” and “unlimited PTO” appeals to people who are green in the tech startup space. A few months in you realize you can’t actually use your PTO because taking time off is impossible and you also realize you are an adult and don’t rely on your place of work to feed you. There were a few other perks that drew me in initially that were quickly taken away when new C-Suite showed up. I will say, there are some wonderful people still at the company, though most smart people left in the last year or so to keep their sanity.

Cons

Micromanaging and gaslighting from leadership on the daily regardless of if you're performing your job duties well or even picking up other people's slack. Toxic work environment, no emotional stability. The changes that have happened are not just "growing pains" as others have tried to persuade. Trust your gut if you're thinking about working here.
