I worked at Screwfix part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great team, great atmosphere, good relationships between staff and customers (barring the 99th percentile). Can do attitude. Discounts at SF and B&Q.

    Cons

"Sales" campaigns that don't appear to be thoroughly thought through.
Poor holiday booking process (12 months ahead, appears to have a pecking order and forget September).
Lack of meaningful incentives below SM/ASM level. (£20 "fill the fridge", really?)

    Advice to Management

Screwfix belongs to the "new" breed of retailer whose only variable in maintaining margin is to increase/decrease staff hours. Just the way it is. I once asked was there any incentive for grunt trade counter staff to actively market additional sales and was told "Yep we get more hours for the store, so you get more hours".
I would suggest that a store bonus might be something to think about. It is, after all, a team effort. Top down directives don't actually sell anything, they just enable it.
You need to sort your holiday booking system out, make it more egalitarian.
A new, less clunky EPOS/Inventory system might also provide a better customer, and indeed staff, experience.

I have been working at Screwfix part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Okay salary
Flexible with hours - reduce hours during exams and extra hours when I’m free (Although in all honestly, those extra hours have been the direct result of me chasing them i.e travelling to other stores to cover them rather than the company just giving out extra hours).

    Cons

    Breaks could be managed better
No real incentive for hard work, after putting in a lot in terms of time and effort for a student I can’t say that I’ve revived any acknowledgement or reward for it. There is no point in putting hard work into something if you don’t get any rewards or benefits from it.

    Advice to Management

Breaks should be clustered together rather than separate this actually makes it feel like you’ve had a break rather than just sitting in the safe room for 5 minutes and going back.
More effort and focus should be placed in store for an employees effort, doing things such as employee of the month or employee of the quarter with rewards such as a £10 plus gift card would make employees feel reward with their job and encourage them to work harder thus providing better customer service.

I have been working at Screwfix full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A fantastic, Somerset based company, in the current economic climate, heading in the right direction. An enjoyable place to go to work everyday with a real family feel to a billion pound business.

    Cons

Flat structure, making progression difficult. Lack of investment in further education, if interested. Competitive salary for the area, but not in comparison to the industry. Very little bonuses provided
